Is anyone else confused by sudden feelings of rage and sadness? I was never the kind of person to lose their cool but lately I’ve felt completely out of control of my emotions. I don’t know if it’s all the craziness going on in the world, or menopause, or both. I hope I’m not the only one feeling this way… – Tessa, Richmond

I feel the same and it started for me since perimenopause, way before coronavirus, but current events are not helping...
Tessa6 years ago
Yes the more I think about it the more I can tell this is caused by menopause and made 10 times worse by current events.

Omg girl. You are not alone. This is my life right now. I’m sooooo confused.

When my anxiety is high, I am short tempered. I used to have issues with more anxiety right before my period. Now, it is also during ovulation. Can’t stand it? Worrying about Coronavirus hasn’t helped...

Totally noticing the instant and inexplicable rage. It took me a couple (who am I kidding - at least a dozen) of rages before I recognised them. Sometimes preceded by a weird total body shudder sort of thing starting at my head or my feet. But yes. PMT on steroids kind of feelings. Telling inanimate objects to f*ck off with the type of rage associated with throwing things, breaking things... or worse (in my head). After a month or so of these though I was able to recognise them. To feel them and understand it wasn’t a true feeling but a hormone. That recognition usually snaps me out of it although sometimes I have to ask people to leave me alone while I work it out. But the important thing is - you’re not alone x

Anniereplying to Kchelle6 years ago
I can fully relate to this, I have started to mistrust what is an actually feeling (that I may choose to act on) and what is hormonal that is better not acted on - at least not at the time!

“to feel them and understand it wasn’t a true feeling but a hormone.” What a fantastic sentence but even better internal realization! Bravo!

What a wonderful way to sum up how it feels when we know we are being irrational or over reactive due to hormones. I’ve found meditation has helped me learn to calm and center myself in the midst of an anxiety attack that can be triggered by overthinking things and knee jerk reacting in a moment without thought. We are all a work in progress and it’s so important to learn to be kind and gentle with ourselves and find ways to support ourselves- like we are all here trying to do. It’s hard to feel out of control and I’ve worked hard to try to find grounding and centering phrases and reminders that my hormones are responsible for much of this and I am not truly going crazy.
Tessa6 years ago
Thank you Clare for sharing your support and wisdom. Recognition is key and I should work on it more in the moment to help me snap out of it

Hi Clare I’m new to the forum. You have just summed up how I’ve been feeling for months. I’ve blamed lockdown, work, my partner..... strangely the rage disappears as quickly as it comes so I try to bite my tongue before voicing my anger at some banal trivia that has set me off. It works sometimes. What a strange thing peri menopause is - it’s crept up on me but actually now I’m reading more about it, symptoms have been present for a few years. For me brain fog is the most disconcerting. I have a high powered job and some days just struggle and this leaving me feeling useless! It scares me. My goal is to work on relieving this symptom with diet and mindfulness. Feeling strong amongst likeminded women!! ?

I’m new to the forum as well... i’m SO glad i joined because i’ve been so depressed, crying spells feelings of hopelessness, feeling like i’m losing my ever loving mind. I had lost my job at a highly stressful place as a nurse. That started it off.. then i had a family crisis happen and idk how to explain other than i feel like i maybe had a mental breakdown or a nervous breakdown. I don’t know WHAT to call it, all ik is that i knew i needed help. Im NOT one to ask for help at ALL, im very independent and as a single parent everyone always said they didn’t know how i do it, im strong, etc. I’ve always been the go to gal! For about the last year i’ve been really struggling. Idk where to turn, the mental health facility isn’t helping a lot. It’s hard to get appts, they are always out so far! My daughters both are on the spectrum so when i tell u my life has never had a dull moment!? it’s an understatement! It’s somewhat of a relief seeing i’m not alone... but it still doesn’t help my mental health, except to know it WILL get better. I feel alone and alienated, my kids have depression too, It’s just me and my 2 daughters at home right now... 18 and 12... so our home is full of hormones! Just wanted to say thank u all for sharing on the platform, because it DOES help knowing u are not completely alone!

I know what you mean. These feelings emerge suddenly and sometimes it’s the smallest of things that triggers them. Things that on other occasions wouldn’t bother me. I always find myself feeling like this either before or after my periods. Want to be left alone. Hardest thing is trying to explain feeling this way to other family members. They just see it as me being in a mood

Yup. For me it is massive despondency -maybe anger turned inward- that comes roaring out of no where. My family doctor has me on magnesium, meditation, and an increase of a mild anti-depressant I take for migraine control timed to hit right before my period. It is really hard. Right now there is so much to truly feel angry and depressed about. It is hard to know when it might be hormonal.

It's just helping me so much to hear from others who get it. Thank you for your comment Julia. I think I'll try some meditation to start!

This is definitely me, I feel so guilty as it’s my husband and son that get the brunt of it. My husband now understands, but not my son. I go to bed most nights hating myself for having the outbursts. I do think my family forget as it’s not a visible thing - anxiety, stress, insomnia and hormones. Has anything helped to ease it, looking at natural supplements ❣️

I so share that feeling of guilt and self-hate after not being able to control myself. Hard to make the kids understand but I definitely need a better way to communicate. I'm working on it! I will share if I try any supplements and if they work :)

So much same- I also noticed when my gyno thought low dose estrogen could help before anyone noticed I had virtually zero testosterone, I was crying at the drop of a hat (not my normal reaction), it was ridiculous. Once we also noticed I’d been exercising (including weights) regularly for a year and was losing muscle mass, I was given option for testosterone. The difference it made was incredible. For me, it made a HUGE difference in emotional balance. I still feel some of this, especially week before my cycle, but overall huge help in emotional balance and ability to keep up with consistent exercise without feeling like I was run over by a truck.

Omg I feel so emotional and annoyed. I just don’t have the support I just keep getting told I’m grumpy. How do I deal with this? I work 12 hours per day then make dinner but get moaned at for being quiet! Have started menopace tablets just hope they are a miracle cure ?
Tessa6 years ago
You'll have to tell me how those work out! I don't know if this is a cure or not but all i've really been able to do is take a time-out. Get some time to myself by going for a walk when I want to be left alone. Easier said than done these days but all I feel I can do.
Karen6 years ago
Hi ya - I take menopace max - it’s got red clover with it supposed to help with fatigue- they (I feel) have helped me no end I wouldn’t be without them! Still get some symptoms but nowhere near as bad as before- you have to take them for a while to notice but I found within couple of weeks much better. Good luck with them & if you do a subscription for them you get money off £20 instead of £25 month -worth every penny for me! xXx

Hi Tessa, it’s definitely not just you. In addition to the stresses caused by current events, it’s very likely you’re experiencing a common symptom of perimenopause. Estrogen affects the production of serotonin, which is a mood regulator and happiness booster. When your body produces less estrogen during perimenopause, your emotions may feel off-balance. You may have noticed that your feelings of anger come and go. It may be more prominent for a week or two, then disappear for the next month or so. This is because your estrogen levels are declining over time. Remember - you won’t feel this way forever, and it’s not just in your head. There’s a chemical reason for what you’re experiencing and you have options to treat or manage it depending on how strongly it’s impacting your life. Consult with your doctor who can provide a treatment plan that’s right for you, and take care of yourself during these stressful times!
Tessa6 years ago
That is exactly how I've felt recently! Inexplicable rage and irritation that will appear and disappear like it has a mind of its own. This explanation helps tremendously. Thank you Julia.

No your most definitely not the only one . There is so much going for everyone at the moment no matter what your age . Let alone that we are going through such a huge change within ourselves. Yes I do feel angry at the best of times . I just need to improve my nutrition as that is always a good start for a good wellbeing. Get in the exercise that definitely releases stress anxiety and anger .

Magnesium is helping I just started a week ago and my internal doc said I’d feel it right away. You see I went for a sleep test in February and failed. Oxygen level low was taken to emergency spent 4 days there and they put me on oxygen which I’m still on 5 months later. I’m 51 quit smoking at 45 tried to get more active gained weight but until October last year wasn’t having too many issues then work was hard actually had to take my daughter with me to my GP to put me on stress leave from work. Then the ambulance ride a week later to hospital and then being put on water pill which had me down 20 pounds in that week. I had fluid around my heart hence I was having issues and swelling. Please if you have issues do not let your doctor dismiss them, Anyway long road ahead I go for lung scan next week hope the fluid is off heart, I am down 70 pounds but have plagued but I am trying to get moving more way easier as I have a portable oxygenation to walk with but hope to not have to keep on it I just got a bi pap machine but poor husband I am really lucky he is supportive and to think I quit smoking to help him finally quit 6 years ago. This app had helped so much along with finally my doctor and his team of specialists like his councillor although once a month not enough so keep using this app and try to regularly get out and keep active. I want to go back to work it’s scary because of COVID times but we have to keep on keeping on! We got this!

I’m suddenly going through some kind of change in my menopause. I felt kind of crappy Mon & Tues. I’ve been in bed for the last 2 days with nausea, headache, gas, joint pain, weepy & crying over dog videos? & uncontrollably flip-flopping between hot & cold flashes. The cold flashes were the worst! Sweats, fluffy socks & a sweater & when in bed a heating pad & duvet shivering & chattering teeth. Yesterday was the worst & today is back to feeling crappy but not like yesterday. Yesterday was SO bad.

I’m actually quite shocked at the sheer depth of the rage! Someone has written about it sometimes turning inwards (I’d never thought of the misery as reverse anger so thank you). Dare I say that on occasions I’ve found it quite refreshing and empowering to be raging and have harnessed it to to be bold enough to discuss controversial issues! It’s a interesting dilemma to balance emotional intelligence with a desire to tell it exactly how it is!!
Erika6 years ago
I had a TBI when I was 24 and it completely altered my personality. I had violent outbursts with no control, which was not like me at all. Then I started getting suicidal depressed for a few days every month, and was also extremely volatile. The slightest thing would set me off. Found a doctor who diagnosed me with PMDD and put me on Super B Complex and Chasteberry. Changed my life. I set a reminder a week before my period and then when the rage and the depression came, I knew it was hormonal and would pass in a few days, and the supplements made it much less severe. When my periods stopped, I thought the PMDD would too. Unfortunately, it just morphed into what everyone is describing. It happens randomly and I can’t set a reminder ?. I went to a naturopath and she put me on Turmeric, ashwaganda, Maca root, high potency omega 3, and vitamin D (I’m deficient). It really stabilized me and I had zero symptoms of perimenopause. I went through a really rough period and stopped taking care of myself, including the supplements, and the hot flashes, mood swings, etc. came on like a wildfire. It was so uncomfortable! I went back on the supplements two weeks ago and all of those symptoms are gone again! The only one that remains is irritability, and also when I work out, my entire body hurts. I read that lack of estrogen causes us not to rebound as fast, so I’m finally considering taking natural estrogen. I’ve avoided HRT up til now, but I think it’s worth it to give it a try.
carolb6 years ago
I could actually feel the anger rise in me before it spewed out. It is definitely menopausal. Since being on HRT that has definitely subsided along with the bone pain (I used to get terrible pain in my feet. In the mornings when I got up I could hardly walk.) and arthritic like pain in my hands. Of course HRT comes with its own 'joys' like hair loss and acne on my chin (although the latter may just be a menopause thing not related to taking HRT?) Never had spots in my life and now at 55 I have that to contend with! Would be interested to hear of any solutions anyone has found for that!)

Clearly, we are all not alone! I read a fantastic article about this saying that when the oestrogen drops, we are basically having drug withdrawals. With the withdrawals, and going cold turkey, the testosterone increases, hence the anger and frustration increase. Knowing this has helped em understand what’s going on in my body. Deep breaths ladies; we’ll get through it!

Can relate to all these comments. It’s like your body has been taken over. Showing my husband a list of menopause symptoms helped. I could then ask for what I needed from him. Thanks for sharing Tessa. A really welcome reminder that we are not in this alone and the is a scientific reason for the way we are feeling and isn’t a choice we are making. I have really struggled on and off for the past 18 mths and have been experiencing extremely unkind thoughts about myself as well as the hostility towards my family which then bringsM on the guilt, it’s such a cruel cycle. I haven’t gone to the Drs as I keep thinking this time might be the last time I’ll feel this way and I’ll probably be palmed off. Reading this and all the brave and honest responses below may have just given me the push to do something about this! Thanks for sharing.

Check out Caitlin Moran’s column on menopause in The Times about 3 weeks ago. Absolutely nails it in the rage issue. I’m trying to embrace the positive side of it: not giving a tiny rat’s a** what anyone thinks of me anymore (liberating!); asking for what I want (empowering); answering back or calling out people on their nonsense (cathartic). You’re definitely not alone!!

Sooooo glad to read this post, I never thought of myself as an easily angry person, I avoided any conflict had to be really pushed to get cross, mostly I’d just walk away. Now I feel like I have had some kind of personality transplant! I seem to snap reallly quickly and it is a proper red mist. I’m noticing it seems to be related to more emotionally-charged situations ie feeling let down by people and although I calm down quickly I am left with an emotional aftermath going round my head for hours and even days and I feel really drained ? yesterday I lost it at work (luckily it was my last day) and - terrible admission - it was in front of my young son (long story why he was with me), I swore in front of him and everything ? so now I feel like I need to reconsider my approach. I tried HRT a while back which helped some of my physical symptoms but actually made a lot of my emotional symptoms worse. That’s when I found this app as I had read a lot about CBT helping and it definitely has, although I seem to be having an anger relapse lately. I’m also worried the personally transplant is going to be permanent!!

I became suicidal one minute and homicidal the next. My GP wanted to put me on antidepressants but I’d been on them before and couldn’t get off them again. It took me years to eventually wean myself off with the help of my doctor. (I’m a psychiatric nurse) So she gave me HRT and although I still feel stressed occasionally, it’s proportionate and I’m not in floods of tears all the time and wanting to jump off a bridge.

Doesn’t happen often or long for me but losing my temper specifically with inanimate objects is definitely a thing. I shouted F off at the air yesterday, which I’ve never done before. Hi Tessa - I have also been experiencing overwhelming feelings of sadness and anger/rage. It’s like I can’t control whichever emotion decides to hit me and I feel the emotion to an extreme that I can’t grasp. I hate that I have no control over when the emotions will hit or how to get them under control. For me I think the rage doesn’t last as long as the sadness/emptiness and I hate that I can’t control the crying that accompanies it. I feel like I’m going crazy almost daily anymore and I hate it.

Day 1 Of my period I feel anger triggers mostly towards my husband who has refused to get a job for the last 10 years and more recently has refused to do much of anything else hat is helpful for us. Anyway, Day 2 of my period I have angry triggers and day three, I feel a little better. At the he end of my period I feel a relief wash over me, like a rush of Dopamine and I am calm again until I have that burst of energy 5 days before I start my period and go through it all again.

Ditto! I get frustrated or angry or incredibly sad out of nowhere. It’s exhausting!

So glad you posted about this. I’m a neurodivergent woman ( ADHD) that has been suffering immensely as of late. I feel negative emotions as physical pain ( hard to explain) and I deal with something called Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria. Anyhow, over the last few months, I have become depressed out of the blue ( over nothing!!!) then it goes away. I’ve then dealt with irritability and that physical-emotional pain I mentioned, and it’s so awful. I know I’m being irrational when I have an episode but have no control, I’m in so much pain and it’s as if I’ve overtaken by the emotion completely. This is all in addition to pain in my muscles, joints, and everything else associated with peri. I’ve been researching it and found some experts say that ADHD women can get hit really hard with mood issues and such during hormonal changed.

Yes! It’s almost like I want to start a fight. Rage and tears, tears and rage. It seems to get really bad a couple times a month (assuming hormone fluctuations when I should be ovulating or having a period). It’s almost like I am buzzing inside with anxiety and emotions and there’s no relief.

I went to my dr simply for this reason. He checked my hormone levels and they were “normal”. I’m a teacher and I can’t feel like this all the time around a bunch of 3rd graders, which is exactly what I told my dr. He wasn’t much help. Any advice or info would be so very appreciated.

I feel this! I’ve always been so patient and chill- now I can cut you with a glance. And once I’m big mad- it’s super hard for me to get un-mad. I can see it’s irrational, but don’t care.
