Mindfulness is the ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we’re doing, and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around us. The goal of any mindfulness technique is to achieve a state of alert, focused relaxation by paying attention to thoughts and sensations without judgment. Mindfulness doesn’t eliminate stress or other difficulties; instead, it gives us more choice in how to handle them in the moment — and a better chance of reacting calmly and empathetically when faced with stress or challenges. Research at the Mayo Clinic found that women with a high level of mindfulness had fewer menopausal symptoms. This was true both for the psychological symptoms, such as depression and anxiety, as well as physical symptoms, like hot flashes and bladder issues — although there was a much stronger correlation with the psychological symptoms. The research also found a correlation between lower stress and fewer menopausal symptoms.

I think mindfulness or any form of meditation is very effective if you can find a form that works for you. I firmly believe that you need a practitioner who you can work with and who can really help you to meditate. Otherwise you’re just lost in a sea of ideas and theories that everyone else seems to be understanding, and you may not be. This is also something that can be hard to do without time, which is priceless, and money, which I don’t have. I went on a hideous course with an apparently very good mindfulness practitioner who was really truly unhelpful. I then began my own search and found my own “path” combined with yoga, at my own pace, and this helps. After all, if it doesn’t fit it in to your own lifestyle, you’re never going to keep it up. Peace.

It helps to calm the mind and body when doing activities I enjoy (walking and exercise).
