Does anyone have IBS flare ups? I’ve been going through menopause for 14 years and seem to have flare ups every few years. I’ve always managed to keep it under control with no over-the-counter medication, then I’ll get a flare up that I just can’t help. Then it just goes on its own after a couple of months with help of over the counter medication to help manage symptoms better. Anyone else with a similar issue?

Hi Suzie. I’m curious, what over the counter medication helps you? I experienced IBS for most of last year. I hope it doesn’t come back again! I also hope it all settles for you.

I also suffer from flare ups every now and again. I was using buscopan (which help clear the flare up) but am currently trying aloe Vera tablets which have really helped keep the bloating down as well as helping stop the flare ups.

Hi Suzie, I get it too! Had a few flare ups during the first lockdown but I was also limited to an organic veg box that was being delivered as opposed to me choosing veg. The endless bags of kale ? tipped it over for me. But I started taking Mebeveine which is sometimes referred to as Colofac and it helps a lot. I also find it better to choose my veg and avoid certain foods, kale and broccoli ? ( in my case) . I have accepted that I will get these waves coming and going with stress but I still think it’s worth talking to a doctor about it. The Mebeverine was prescribed to me, 1 tablet 3 times a day when it is at it’s worse but now I just take one if I have bloating. It is something we may have to live with. All the best xx

Thought I had IBS Then started tracking what I ate and drank Seems caffeine was the culprit so I’m drinking less to no caffeine

Yes! This is my new complaint!! IBS for a little over a year. It’s BS is what it is. Just another thing that drs don’t know what to do about. Very frustrating. I’m 53 and periods have been insanely heavy and irregular for about 3 years. If going through the change lasts up to 10+ years and I’m only 1/3 there, I’ll need more than meds to be normal! My periods are so heavy they make me house bound, running to the bathroom every hour. Leaking through super plus tampon and pad and then sitting there passing clots and bleeding into the toilet bowl. There has to be a better way to deal with this and IBS and nerve pain and neuropathy and weight gain and acne and cysts.

I suffer with flare ups too, they can last for months then just magically disappear. For me it manifests itself as very low pelvic pain. Ultrasounds, CTs and hysteroscopies over the years have never identified a cause. I now take buscapan cramps at the first sign of a twinge and they keep it at bay. Mine started when I was peri about 10 years ago. I also have had to give up HRT as this made the pain worse x

I take a probiotic and prebiotic supplement and drink kefir ever morning. Plus hot water and lemon 1st thing to cleanse digestion.

Thanks for sharing your routine. That makes total sense. I still take probiotics to help with IBS and had a few medications which helped immensely. I really like the warm water and lemon too. It’s a perfect way to start with the day.

I’ve been eating low FODMAP diet which helps but sometimes still flares up

I am doing low FODMAP as well and have found my triggers. Has really helped my IBS. I have struggled with this for over 30 years and I think understanding FODMAPs has helped more than anything!

Mine has been terrible and out of control. I have to take toilet paper with me now on every run! Iv had several accidents and nothing helps, but will go as quick as it came. This attack has been the worst.

Yes, Diagnosed with IBS in my early 30’s. It took forever and a multitude of testing to diagnose it. Now turning 60 and although it’s better Menopause didn’t help. Post menopausal for 12 years. When does it end. Daily prescription medication and a good GI is the only way to go.

Low FODMAP diet- it’s a lot of work at first, but worth it.

Yes, I have the same problems. I was diagnosed at age 30 and IBS flairs, regardless of diet at 60. Even my GI maintenance medication doesn’t seem work when they are continuous. OTC is the only thing that eventually helps. Just made another GI appointment to get some relief. Praying that you get relief soon.

I’ve been in menopause since age 39 due to hysterectomy and have had IBS my entire life! I mostly just suffer through it. I’m extremely bloated all of the time right now. I do take probiotics daily and try to mostly eat healthy. I go to a personal trainer 3 days a week and am active daily. Yet I am unable to lose weight.

I’m suffering terribly the last two months with IBS after everything I’m eating about half hr after I get terrible wind bloat and then come the reflux , it’s effecting my life daily and impacting on sleep and my love of food, I can only manage soup and a slice of bread comfortably at the moment . My oestrogen and progesterone levels are through the roof and the GP doesn’t provide any useful help. Truth is they don’t know how to treat it. So I’m going private with the DR Megan Rossi the gut health clinic to see if that will rebalance everything . It’s making me so miserable ?

Yes! When I first started perimenoupause, I had a few flares and never had any prior history of IBS. It’s so painful!! I feel so bad for people who suffer from it regularly. My doc gave me buscopan as well - I just have some extra on hand should it happen again. It’s been a couple years since I’ve had an incident.

Definitely, I have had IBS for 24 years but since hitting 45 (now 49), everything has gone haywire. I’ve got upper and lower digestive issues, I’m sure my hormones are upsetting everything. No help from my gastroenterologist or GP. It’s really having an impact on my life right now.
