I never used to have food or weight issues but I’ve just started menopause symptoms. Is it normal to all of a sudden gain almost 20 pounds and crave sweets that I never craved before? Would hormones help get it back under control? I’m tempted to finally go back to my doc and request hormones, if it will help.
I feel so fat and ugly. Never felt this way before! Hope someone can empathize and/or verify with what I’m going through. ?? Thank you!!

I think proper diet is much better then hormon therapy
Miss R5 years ago
The issue isn’t always due to having a proper diet. Weight gain is a main symptom perimenopuse because of fluctuating hormones.

I feel the same, so out of control and hopeless. Tried to tell my husband, he just laughed we have been on same diet, he dropped 50 lbs in 10 weeks, I lost 0

I don’t know, but I hear you. I’ve been a consistent 8 and half stone all my life. Am 47 now. Even at 9 months pregnant with both babies, my heaviest was 10 stone. I’m now over 10 stone in 1 year, and I don’t know whether to blame hormones or lock down. I’ve somehow acquired an extra 20 pounds too. Would be happy to hear from others also.

I started menopause abruptly at 45. Immediately before that I had been the most fit I had ever been in my life by following Haylie Pomroy’s Fast Metabolism Diet lifestyle for 4 years (google the book and the app). It completely transformed my metabolism and turned my body around even without added exercise. Adding muscle strengthening exercises, reasonable cardiovascular exercise and intentional calming habits (stretch, meditation, walks, massage) to the nutrition plan made an even greater impact…until menopause hit. Then none of my healthy habits worked anymore. I consulted my doctor and ended up doing bio-identical hormone replacement (estrogen cream and progesterone pills). They helped mood and hot flashes but did nothing for insomnia or weight gain. I then researched BioTE sub-dermal HRT pellets. With BioTE, the hormone dosages were automatically released into my bloodstream over a 4 month period, and I didn’t have to worry about the accuracy of cream pumps or transferring the hormones to my loved ones. BioTE plus a no-sugar, restricted complex carb nutrition plan helped me drop 20 of the 35 pounds I had gained through menopause. After some frustration with my BioTE doctor, I found a new Gynecologist BioTE provider. He rechecked my hormone levels and added all of the hormones that I needed in proper doses (Thyroid, Estrogen, Progesterone, Testosterone). That was the trick for my body. Finding the proper HRT balance helped break the barrier that was keeping me from being able to drop the remaining 15 pounds. It has taken 3 years, 5 different doctors, and 2 nutritionists to figure it out, but I firmly believe that proper hormone balance has everything to do with my body even being in the position to be able to maintain a healthy body composition (muscle mass, BMI, fat %, cellular water levels, bone density). I should say, I’m a Certified Pilates Instructor and passionate nutrition nerd. I whole-heartedly agree that nutrition and body movement absolutely are essential in addition to finding hormonal balance. For me, HRT was the key that unlocked the ability for nutrition and exercise to impact my body during menopause.

That sounds compelling, but I’m afraid of getting breast cancer from HRT.

Get your thyroid checked as well. Diet (low grain, low sugar, healthy fats, organic, clean protein, unprocessed foods, lots of veggies and moderate fruit), exercise and HRT to help ease the transition.
Stephanas5 years ago
I’m afraid thyroid is blamed for weight gain aswell as poor diet but why can’t people understand that good diet and exercise is all good but hormones are 100% to blame for gain in peri and menopause!!!!! Acknowledge it PLEASE!!???

As we age, on top of menopause, our metabolism is slower..so eating right and smaller portions is crucial, as well as more exercise. The stress of the pandemic has not helped.

I will be 70 next week & have been fighting my weight for several years. When at work I always weighed around 11 stone but am now nearer 14 stone, my exercise is limited as I have arthritis in both knees. We eat lots of fish, Sword fish, Tuna , skate, smoked haddock & various shell fish lots of fresh vegetables and salads not many carbs. Don’t seem to be able to shift any weight. We cycle around 5 miles most days.

I excercise in the gym 6 times a week, eat a healthy diet and only have wine on Saturday night and Sunday lunch and I am gaining weight. I am not on HRT.
Savannah5 years ago
I feel exactly the same! Except I am on HRT and it has not helped one bit with weight loss. Has helped with night sweats, pms, mood swings, brain fog...but not the stubborn weight. I used to always be same weight forever - then hit 50 and belly fat started showing up. And exercise and eating right is not having any effect. Even no alcohol doesn’t help. I don’t eat processed foods, little sugar or dairy, basically gluten free- regular exercise and weight lifting - and have still gained weight. Now 15lbs over normal...almost to where I was when I was pregnant and it is so frustrating. Really do not know what to do about it...hrt is having no effect

I’d love to know too. I follow a strict keto diet and even fast regularly, and do moderate exercise everyday. But at age 47 I can’t shed pounds unless I severely cut back on calories (not just carbs anymore!) but in doing so I’m just plain hungry and not enjoying life. My doc said I probably just need to eat less—not much help there. I wonder about hormone therapy all the time.
Belinda5 years ago
Your experience makes sense and went through the same. The difficulty is that naturally our metabolism starts to slow as we age and by restricting calories (when it’s actually needed the most) it actually triggers the brain to hold on to more fat than releasing it. This is not to say, we should overeat but for us to embrace an extra serving of wholesome foods in our diet. To illustrate this effect, albeit the complex nature of the human body, here are a couple of factors that affect how this happens: - With less calories and assuming most foods consumed are processed, the thermic effect of eating and digestion goes down. - When the thermic effect goes down, your resting metabolic rate goes down - Calories burned through “any physical activity” despite what our electronic gadgets say, is actually less because the metabolism is already so low and any moderate or heavy exercise, is like throwing kerosene on the fire - hence the feeling of stress and increased anxiety, which leads to insomnia, insulin resistance, etc. - Eating more processed foods (because they are already processed such as low fat, low sugar, etc.) reduces the actual calories your body burns. So if meals are calculated by calories, it’s kinda asking for trouble because there is no one gold standard regardless of what is claimed on the food package - Reducing actual calories digested and burned increases hunger signals causing hunger cravings - To add insult to injury, a rise in cortisol from the stress of restrictive dieting causes our bodies to hold on to more water, making us feel “softer” and less lean - Then because of our A-type personalities ?, we want to control the “situation” so we work out even harder, further reduce calories, and that’s where our hormones wreak havoc even at their already “declining” state.
Cerenthareplying to Belinda4 years ago
So what’s the answer??
Belinda5 years ago
Part II I too am on keto and turning 45 in a few months but I let go of the restrictive eating and stopped counting calories - now I just eat to enjoy my food and sleep more. I also meditate which helps me manage my stress and hormone levels to a sweet spot so I’m not constantly elevating cortisol and thrashing my hormones. I also started cooking more Whole Foods and incorporating more protein, carbs and grains (a balanced approach) so my body feels satisfied and actually digesting my food and burning the calories. This makes me feel more satisfied. I also stopped constant HIIT exercises and daily running which in a low metabolic state was leaving me drained - it worked in my 20s and 30s; not so much now. Lastly, daily practice of self-compassion, to listen more to my body, and trust its intuition. The ketogenic diet is great but I realize most of the science was done on rats, men, children, and the elderly. Women are typically not featured in a lot of scientific research as there are too many variables particularly as it pertains to hormonal fluctuations we experience throughout our lives, which makes sense considering the scientific need to control for variables. As more women progress with any form of keto or intermittent fasting and share their experiences, there is more awareness that the extremes doesn’t really serve us well especially as we progress on our journey.
Belinda5 years ago
Part III For me, moderation is key and the biggest was self-compassion with the awareness I can’t control all of it and to accept my ideal body weight yet remain healthy so I can live longer and stronger. As I progress and feel more nourished and satisfied, I plan on adding back 1-2 day a week strength training exercises in addition to yoga so I can build lean muscle to support my bones as I get older. I don’t own a scale - I donated it three years ago; I also gave away my Apple Watch during the pandemic and learning to trust my intuition and a measuring tape and not overthink - it’s been freeing ? At the height of the pandemic, I gained weight too but with some of the strategies I mentioned above, I’m weirdly feeling leaner, less stressed, and so much better. I hope this helps ?? P.S.: I’m a certified functional nutritionist and it wasn’t until I started taking my own advice I’d typically share with clients ? that things started to turn. So let’s eat a little bit more especially if on a restrictive diet, love ourselves more (self-love is not indulgence), and stay calm more. With a balanced approach, our hormones know what to do. They’re not out to “get us” - promise.
J.B.replying to Belinda5 years ago
Belinda, thank you for your thorough and (not unwelcome) extensive reply. It was very informative and I really felt the heartfelt care you must extend to your clients! In terms of my keto diet, I do agree, it has been studied in just about everyone but women. I hate to say that we are sadly used to that though. For further background, I have been on a low carb/keto diet for going on 15 years now and not until I hit my late 30s did I notice a small but significant change: not being able to shake off weight I’d put on every now and then. In the last 5 years, no matter how strict or “clean” my diet was I now started to put in weight if I didn’t curb calories as well. I do not have a big appetite and tend to eat small meals already so this was particularly dismaying. I started intermittent fasting and found it was the only thing that kept me from gaining pounds, and now the only way I can lose is to push it further to 1 meal a day or two very, very small meals which as I mentioned is no bueno for me. That’s just not a sustainable and happy life—not for me anyway. And keeping in mind I eat tons of veggies (I love them) and moderate to small amounts of meat. I guess that’s why I keep wondering about HRT—not with the intention to stay on it long term, but to find out if it has an affect on my weight. What I would love to take away from that is learn about what foods and supplements I can take that will help me to feel better and get back to a weight where I felt good in my own skin without using HRT. I don’t think HRT is a solution and most likely not for me, but I can’t help but be curious. Having said all that, your advice on self love is a good point to consider for sure and may just be the answer for me if I can learn to wrap my head around it! As women we do struggle with that so much.
Belindareplying to J.B.5 years ago
I feel you! The body is complex yet simple: a few things I’d recommend: - Reduce the intermittent fasting to no more than 12 hours and just a few times a week - Add more protein into your diet (I prefer whey isolate protein and find a truly clean unflavored one; if you’re vegan - four sigmatic has a decent clean plant-based protein although whey is best) - Add a little bit more carbs into your diet (sweet potato) Hope this helps ?

Hi Belinda, thanks for sharing your experiences and suggestions! Glad I found this app. It’s been great to find I’m not alone. Yet sad (in my case) that I’ve had to search hard for support about premenopausal stage in my life. I’ve heard from my doctor that women’s metabolism slows to 25-30% so we need to fine tune our eating habits and be sure to include movement and exercise in our day... as challenging as that can be sometimes! I’ve had my daughter and sisters support which has helped my mental & physical state! It shows in my reduced blood pressure. However, I’ve also had the CoVID 15 where I’ve gained 15 lbs during the pandemic! :) Please tell me as a nutritionist your thoughts about making sure we hit the RDA (recommended daily allowance) for Fiber, Vitamin D, Omega-3, and magnesium. I hear it is good with reducing weight and increasing overall health for women pre & post menopause. I’m trying it now as I’m paying attention to my foods, drinking more water & with my added exercise routine starting a week ago. I’m no cover girl, but I’m feeling less foggy. By the way, I’m using the app Cronometer. It counts macros and calories which is great. What is also great is I can “drill” down to what kinds of nutrients come from the foods I’ve eaten that day. Example, folate is high with Cheerios. Broccoli has many great nutrients, and strawberries great for vitamin C, to name a few. I’m learning a lot and open to hear yours & anyone else’s thoughts and suggestions. Also any suggestions on managing the deep acne? It is so random. Common spot is on and around my chin. Thank you!

In my case, when having to switch between different HRT meds due to shortages, I would gain weight with one, and as soon as I went back on the preferred one I would lose it again. So yes, hormones can cause big fluctuations. However, in my experience that doesn’t work forever. I gained a bunch of weight over the year and am now slowly getting it back into control with a strict diet and the gym (when it’s open). I find that I need a lot more protein in my diet these days to keep from gaining and to stop the cravings for sweets.

Which hormones did you use that made you gain weight, in my area Gp was shortage of HRT and prescribed me those external pumps cream, I haven’t started because I heard with those you can gain much more weight! ?
Beatriz5 years ago
Please, do tell which hormones did you take? I have always been skinny and ate whatever I felt like without gaining any weight. However, since I entered the pre menopause or peri menopause, I suddenly put on weight in a very short period of time! I started HRT yesterday and I was under the impression that HRT would make the most common symptoms of menopause, such as hot flashes, night sweats, headaches and gaining weight go away... I am on “Trisekvens”, it’s a disk with little pills in 3 different colours; and as I one of the the side effects is weight gain. Yeah.. I am super newbie here
Louise C5 years ago
Hi! Which HRT did you find was best for losing the weight?
Saraah5 years ago
I’m the same, I’ve gained 20lbs in the last year, but to be fair I think it’s a combination of lack of activity, not eating healthy. It’s so boring being stuck at home every day there’s not much to do other than eat and watch tv. I find the extra 20lbs extremely bothersome. I’ve also put it down to peri menopause too, I’m 45 and been experiencing many symptoms. I’m 5ft and my weight always used to be consistent, I’m comfortable around 8st 12-9st 4. I just wish I knew what to do about it.

I feel your pain, it was like a switch had been flicked .. literally as soon as I turned 50 the weight gain started. I’ve never struggled with my weight before but am now the heaviest I’ve ever been .. 9st 13lb. I exercise regularly, eat quite healthy, only have a couple of glasses of wine Friday and Saturday night! Is there anything else I can do? ?

Unexplained weight gain was one of the first flags I had that menopause was looming!! I’ve never really struggled with my weight and could eat pretty much whatever I wanted. But in the last couple of years I’ve gained a couple stone that will not shift despite all efforts. Just started HRT two months ago so I’ll be thrilled if it also helps me to get my weight under control (amongst all the other symptoms I’m hoping to get relief from). Would be interested in sharing experiences and support with others who want to shift weight.
Lorraine5 years ago
I totally understand how you feel E. ? I’ve been on HRT for a year now, I’m 45, getting married in June and I have gained 1st over this time (and yes, I’ve already bought my dress yikes!!). I have been doing dry January (first time and I’m very proud of myself), sticking to 1300 cals per day, exercising 30 mins or more on most days, drinking more water, I’ve lost zilch. The GP said it’s probably the menopause that is preventing me from losing the weight and if there’s still no change in 4 weeks, they will test my thyroid. So, in my experience, HRT doesn’t seem to help with weight management but it does help with hot flushes, thinking clarity, anxiety, breakouts etc. I have been listening to Slimpod, and even though I haven’t lost any weight (or inches), I am feeling more comfortable and happier with myself, which is a first and feel relief that I’m not constantly beating myself up and have more optimism. I hope this helps a little and sending you a big virtual hug. X

My doctor has told me that if you can get through the menopause without being medicated it is better for you, so I am starting Hair Gain for my thinning hair and am trying digestive enzymes as a supplement to help get rid of any food that lingers in the colon, especially if the colon is damaged in older age.

I put on 2 stone rapidly during perimenopause when I reached 50 and was shocked at the change in my body because I had never had weight gain or yo-yoing weight before. I felt awful and to make it worse I developed psoriasis which was so bad on my legs that it honestly looked like I had third degree burns! I had acupuncture which started shifting the psoriasis and I joined Weightwatchers, started running daily and practicing yoga and lost 2 stone in 3 months. I found it really boosted my confidence and reduced my anxiety considerably.

Not on HRT but been thinking about it. I’m just concerned about the links to breast cancer, my Mum’s had breast cancer so my chances of getting it are high anyway, but don’t want to add to the chances by going on HRT. On the other hand, I’ve gained weight. But my main problem is sleep or lack of. I’m totally exhausted at end of day but when I go to bed I just can’t drop off. Makes me like a zombie & makes everything else ten times worse. I’m 42 and not had a period for over year so guess I’m into menopause now. :( Another ten days of this will finish me off & the thought of a possible 10 years more is beyond bearable.

Good to read! All the way through my 30s and early 40s, I maintained a healthy weight and could lose it easily if I gained a couple of lb. I have gained a stone over the last 2 years when peri menopause really kicked in. I’m 48. I do yoga most days and am vegan and have started running gently. I am very “healthy” so it really isn’t about diet and exercise. I was interested to read about processed foods and am reducing them as much as is reasonable for me. I have to be careful with restricting food as I have a history of eating disorder so it’s been challenging. I don’t want to be obsessed again with calories and exercise and the scales! I think trying to practice self love, acceptance and compassion helps. Some days that’s easier than others!

I have always had weight issues going from model-thin to 235 lbs (pregnant) and in between throughout my adult life. That said, currently (two years after my last period) it has been impossible to control eating and gaining weight. Granted, I’ve had a series of unfortunate events through the past year (wearing a boot for a stress fracture on a toe for six weeks; sick with covid for six weeks; and the latest two broken ankles with one getting two plates and ten screws going on a little over 12 weeks now) which have made my ability to move limited and maintaining any kind of diet impossible. I’ve been thinking that the usual cardio will not be the best option, but rather body building. Bottom line is that I am freaking out about menopause locking my body into this current state (222 lbs) no matter what I do once I get mobile again. Has anyone over 50 had success turning their body around and what did you do for excercise and nutrition?

Hi, I’m 44 and I have premature ovarian failure. My weight has really sky rocketed despite the fact that I’m probably the fittest I’ve ever been. I spoke to a menopause dietitian. He broke it down for me in very simple terms. My food intake needs to be cut by a third to compensate for the lack of estrogen, (I was a Porsche I’m now a fiat) his words not mine. But my input capacity is not the same as it was in my 30s. I took this and tried a new approach of eating less moving a bit more. Simple but so far so good it’s getting results. I hope this helps.

I had been able to lose weight no problems until 50. Then although I try to eat healthy, lots of salad, no processed foods, oatmeal, flax seed etc, I can’t drop below 185. Had no periods for 5 years, then bam, full fledged 7 day heavy period. Thought it was because I had been moms sole caregiver, she died from thyroid storm in one week, after never being diagnosed with thyroid issues. Had mine checked and my thyroid doesn’t function. I was tested and found out I was post menopausal, but had no progesterone, no testosterone, no nothing. Been taking NP for my thyroid for over a year now and told it would increase my energy level and depression. No such luck! My joints hurt, my muscles hurt, just walking hurts my hips. I’m at wits end. I’m on NP in the morning, warfarin in the day, and Paxil, irrebestartn hclz & mirtazipine at night. Plus 600-1200 ibuprofen during the day just to function due to the pain. Help
Eli4 years ago
Lisa, I’m so sorry to hear about what you’ve been and still going through. May I ask what NP is? I don’t have a thyroid because of a thyroidectomy to treat Graves Disease and take levothyroxine (Synthroid) and liothyronine (Cytomel) to replace the hormones. But honestly, I’ve never felt the same and am considering a switch to Armour (a natural and complete thyroid hormone). I can tell you that both Paxil and mirtazapine are known to cause weight gain. Also, the level of ibuprofen you take is risky for both your GI tract (believe me, I know because I ruined mine this way) and your kidneys. We need to ge to the bottom of this pain and hopefully get it treated properly! I’d also consider getting tested for Rheumatoid Arthritis and Lymes disease. Both cause joint and muscle pain. I wish you so much luck and love!

Im almost 49yrs old and going through menopause. I crave sugar like crazy too now and mostly at nightI I weigh more everytime I get on the scales! This is the heaviest I’ve ever been in my life too! I quit smoking a couple of years ago and that’s when the weight actually started but I was able to lose 10lbs at that time but not anymore! I’m not happy with the way I look or feel but I couldn’t handle hormone replacement. I had some friends recommend I try Estroven but the only time I will buy it is if it’s on sale or I have a coupon because it’s like $20 a box for only 30days so I don’t think I’ve taken it long enough to know if really helps or not.

Each of us are different but I was premenopausal after losing a baby at 40. I then quickly developed Adenomyosis, followed by a Polyp, Endometriosis, precancerous cervix cells three times.. put on so much weight...then had a massive hormonal breakdown. Crying, screaming, intolerant, rude, insomnia..... I was Deputy Chief Inspector for the RSPCA, degree qualified, nice mother of two gorgeous boys 7 and 11 at the time. Three dogs, gun license, euthanasia drugs enough to kill the whole of our beautiful close in Horsham. My exhusband (now) just didn’t understand. He ran a small profitable business. I lost everything...... EVERYTHING.. my vocation in life, my profession, my dignity, my husband of 23 years together...... I attacked him and slapped him...... he called the police on me and my children have never lived with me since. Bitter divorce. Depression, drinking, drugs, so so messy, heartful more so I I then found out he had already started divorce proceedings but just didn’t tell me?! 23 years!?????? HRT HRT HRT HRT!!!!!! I do hope that you get really good advice because my menapause has made me suicidal. Please don’t suffer like I did. My life’s worth shitnow. Good luck girl. Xx

Everyone here needs to know that fat is a source of estrogen. So when your body starts going through the menopause and is losing estrogen it does everything it can to lay down fat deposits as a new source of estrogen - all it is trying to do is replace the estrogen you’ve lost. This is why menopausal women get thick around the middle. Knowing this doesn’t prevent the weight pile on - I’ve added 20 lbs I can’t shift during lockdown - but it maybe helps to understand you are fighting against your own bodies natural instincts. That is why it’s so hard to lose the weight. For me the French leek diet (2 days of just leeks!) and intermittent fasting is the only thing that shifts a few pounds. But then they come right back on again. Sigh
Sarah5 years ago
Just to follow up on my estrogen/fat comment. You can check for yourself that fat is a source of estrogen. I first read it in an amazing book that will change how you view fat: The Secret Life of Fat by Sylvia Tara PhD. As the author explains the science behind the body’s greatest puzzle you will gain a new respect for this unloved part of our anatomy!! My takeaway from the book - don’t beat yourself up for putting on the pounds at this time of life. It’s a perfectly natural response to losing estrogen. It doesn’t make me any happier about my changing body but helps me appreciate why it is such a tough fight to lose even a few lbs!

Thank you everyone. So helpful to read all these comments which ring true with me too. Now 48 and peri menopausal with mild symptoms but the weight gain is getting me down. Always been slim and able to control my weight easily. Always been super fit, running, cycling or swimming daily and now just feel sluggish and heavy. Spoke to doctor last week about HRT but terrified that will lead to further weight gain. Had disordered eating in past so rarely weigh myself just feel it in how clothes fit. No one here seems to have found HRT helped with weight control so reluctant to go there unless other symptoms get much worse.

Hello E; I have the same issues and finding It very hard to loose weight. Due to my BRCA diagnosis, no hormone medication.

Taking hormones will not stop you from gaining weight. I tried that, it’s only control your hot flashes and your mood swings

Oh no! I didn’t know menopause could cause weight gain too. Ye Gods, I’m so screwed. I used to be 12 stone, consistently. Then I gave up smoking, got accelerated arthritis (crippled in 2 years), so the GP put me on steroids to “help”. So then I couldn’t work or exercise much. Then lockdown so even less exercise! I’m now 17 stone and desperately trying to lose it. Now you’re telling me this too?! ? ?

This would be great to know and definitely something I will be asking at my next appointment. Of course the pandemic hasn’t helped and nor does the craving of sweets so need to stop at the donut shop on my way to work. ?

I feel exactly the same way - almost 15 pounds, with brain fog, incredible pain and migraines.

OMG - these real for real questions are life saving. I have experienced the same thing. I literally have the ‘spare tyre’ thing going on. I can grab a huge chunk of skin and let’s face it fat - but know not where this has come from. I do think lockdown and the menopause combined forces, but man - it’s a change maker.

@Belinda - that’s it isn’t it - this is all part of a natural process - but we want things to be other than they are. Belinda your a kill joy but I love you. Thank you being real with me!

I’ve been on HRT for the last 7 years & I gained 2 stone ? however for the last 4 weeks I’ve been calorie counting, only eating 1200 calories per day & ive managed to lose a stone with the help of the my fitness app so there is light at the end of this long tunnel ☺️

I’ve always had a sweet tooth and struggled with weight but this feels different. I used to have more control than I do now. I catch site in a mirror and I’m horrified by my body, thicker waist, I feel frumpy and miserable. I couldn’t have kids and the ivf I went through messed up my head and my periods. I’m only 44 and have been going through irregular periods for around 3 years. I’ve only just managed to convince my doctor who is reluctant but I’d going to start me on patches in the next few weeks. My moods are up and down. I let things get to me and take so much to heart. My partner is older than me and not very sympathetic. He’s been going through his own issues and doesn’t seem to care about what I’m going through. I went into care work during covid I’ve quit that to go as a mobile hairdresser. I’m trying to get back to me. Having more time on my hands isn’t always the best for my brain and anxiety. I’m struggling to move forward and believe in myself.

My cycle was the bane of my existence. I was *happy* when menopause started, I used to get so sick every month. Now, though, I’m heavier than I’ve been in my entire life. My migraines are back, and I’ve been hypothyroid for 15 years. Losing weight is so difficult now. I can’t do keto because I can’t readily digest fats and it’s too much strain on my kidneys. Soy-based anything triggers migraines. Sometimes I wonder why I fought so hard to stay alive when my health is dragging so low. I don’t want HRT, but if I can’t lose this weight, my other health needs will take the choice out of my hands.
Michelle5 years ago
I am having the same issue. Last pregnancy was brutal. Thyroid became nonexistent, periods were horrible and hair loss became normal. Told by GP that things would get better after menopause. Yeah right! Past the menopause landmark and thyroid worse, migraines, weight gain, back pain, buzzing head and forgetfulness. Welcome to being a woman!!!

I feel the same way. I retired from Fire Rescue as a firefighter paramedic. I have gained a lot of weight. I am embarrassed and sleep in the guest room. It’s like I have no control of craving sweets every night. I went into menopause after high dose chemo treatments for non-Hodgkins lymphoma.

I have gained weight that no matter what I do I cannot loose! I crave sweets and even though I would have one now &then I never craved them like now. I live alone and don’t cook for myself often and done eat out often, sometimes when I get home from work I just sit and munch on junk food even though I’m not hungry. I have never been like this and I am 59 years old. Seems like I have no energy to get up and do anything that’s not like me either. I don’t know what’s going on with my body, But I don’t like it.

I to also tried HRT a while back but then my doctor told me that it could cause breast cancer in women if used in a long period of time. I recently lost my mom not because of, but she was diagnosed with breast cancer several years ago and had to have a mastectomy. The more I thought about it the more scared i became and I stopped at HRT. At that particular time I was taking shots monthly.

I can definitely sympathise as I am experiencing the same. I thought it was the shutdown weight. However, being j healthcare, I constantly worked in a high pressure position. I never ate so that couldn’t be it. I went to my physiciywho informed me that I was in peri, or full blown, menopause. Bullocks. Didn’t want to hear that. Oh well.?

OMG! The weight change has been devastating. I’ve been a size 7/8 since my 20’s and the same bra size 36B for just as long. Even after 2 kids I’ve been happy how I look. I was so proud of my tiny waist. Then I hit 50 and it all went to sh**! I have this horrible pouch that I can’t get rid of and I’m now a 38B ( how does that happen?). My diet hasn’t changed so WTF! What can I do to get rid of this flab?
Savannah4 years ago
So relate! Same measurements and now a size 10/12 and 38B and even that is starting to feel snug :( I eat super healthy Mediterranean diet, working with a health coach, walking 30min every day and cannot lose anything. Clothes are snug- finally had to go buy new jeans. It is very depressing!

A friend has stayed the same weight thru menopause using “bio identicals”. I’d like to know more about them/ it. I was just starting perimenopause when the lockdown began. I keep having this feeling that I am gaining a pound or two of water weight before the period but then I didn’t actually get my period & that pound or two never shed. I recognize that all the shifts that took place in my schedule and lifestyle during lockdown lead to less muscle maintenance and a little bit more consumption. I made an effort, after the holidays, to lose the 5 pounds Id gained. In the past that effort would’ve changed things. This time however, I gained the muscle mass back but that extra fat never went away. I feel strong but I’m now 10 pounds more and I’ve recently ripped - as in, (took a squat to stretch them and heard the tear) my go to pair of jeans.

When I’m on Keto I get a lot more hot flashes so super frustrating anyone else notice this?

I’ve learned so much reading all these comments. I can now explain my new sweet tooth that I have. Well I’m 49 and I’ve never done HRT. The night sweats are the worst. I literally wake up soaking wet. The sheets are all wet I feel so gross. My hair and every thing is soaked. It happens about 3 to 4 days a week. My mood swings are bad too. I work out 4 days a week. I do lifting and cardio. I gained 20 lbs over the last year amd can’t seem to shake it off. I have my days where I feel fat and ugly. Wish I could afford a mommy makeover. I already have anxiety prior to menopause and that some days is threw the roof. Glad to know it’s not just me going threw all this too. When will it stop?
Savannah4 years ago
I started HRT patch and progesterone pill to assist with night sweats and mood swings and brain fog- it has made life livable again. I don’t like being on HRT as long term issues scare me, but to get through the worst of the symptoms it has been a life saver. Want to go off HRT but afraid night sweats and mood swings will come back. Going to discuss with my Dr. Recently having break through bleeding so making an appt as that is not supposed to happen on HRT. Ugh.

I am heavier than I was at the end of my pregnancy, start of light in the morning and an elephant in the evening. Don’t have the energy to do exercises and none of last year’s summer clothes fit. It happened so quickly, I never had to worry about weight before

I have also found that is harder to lose weight now I am post menopause, but still having hot flushes and heart palpitations. I can’t have a cheat day at the weekend anymore and lose weight. It is slow too, a half to one pound every week, even with exercise - but so worth it. Managed to shift 10 pounds before Christmas but it is 90% in the mind, and rest in preparation and execution.

I went on Keto and it helped my sugar cravings, and keto snacks help. There are so many recipes online, now I don’t crave sugar. But crave the keto snacks. And every once in a while I will allow myself a sugar filled treat, if I must. But it’s been so long now, I haven’t.

At 58 I have just gone back into HRT having previously been taken off it 4 years ago. Once I came off HRT my weight increased by 2 stone fairly rapidly - despite changes to healthy eating. All of it is in my middle and I am optimistic the HRT may help. My new Doctor has also suggested that I’m not fully through the menopause as my symptoms included night sweats, foggy brain, aching hips and knees, fatigue - all of which I had assumed was stress/workload/age/pre-diabetes as I had been told I was through menopause lol. Guess what four weeks into HRT (and one shocking break through bleed- think none for five years) foggy brain & night sweats disappeared and three pounds lighter ( I weigh twice weekly)
Susan5 years ago
I just went onto HRT two weeks ago. Strangely enough, I gained 12 pounds overnight. Literally. After two weeks I could not take it anymore and went off of the hormone patches and purchased all natural supplements for women’s menopause. What a difference! It’s a lot of money, but the hormone therapy patches were also very expensive for me. I instantly lost 10 pounds and feel loads better. The hot flashes are at two a night as opposed to 13-20, and I’m no longer bloated. I HAVE to take the supplements twice daily, however. It’s a lot of pills, all natural though.

Can I ask what supplements you’re taking please getting desperate now

Can I ask what’s worked for you? I’ve only just started researching supplements and am completely overwhelmed by all the options (and the prices!!). Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

This sound exactly what’s happening to me. I’m 47 I was 112lb before lock down and was maintaining during the first lockdown. I’d got myself a good routine with exercises and cardio. Then during second lockdown my weight started increasing, my stomach just below my navel is squishy and over hangs my clothes. I’m up to 125lbs can’t even get myself below 120. I’ve increase cardio. My arms are staring to look rippley. When I look down at my legs all I see is old lady legs!! I’ve started with panic attacks when driving. I’m still getting a cycle at them moment but I have noticed they are changing as well. One month I was 22 days next I was 38 days and one time when I started the bleeding lasted more than 7 days..

Same here. More like 25 pounds.
