High heart rate?

I’m new here and I was wondering if anyone else has high blood pressure with a fast heart rate? I’m taking blood pressure medicine but my heart rate is still high. Please help, I’m freaking out!

I would suggest to ask your doctor for a 24 hour halter monitor. That way you get an idea of how fast your heart is beating and whether you need medication to slow it down. Stress also increases your heart rate so try some mindfulness or meditation to help relaxation.

  • CK5 years ago

First, I recommend contacting your doctor about it. Some blood pressure medications only affect blood pressure, while others affect blood pressure and heart rate. It might be worth trying a different medication. Second, yes, I am on metoprolol for high blood pressure and high heart rate. It definitely helps!

    • Ameroon45 years ago

Hi CK that’s what I’m on. I guess it help for th most part but I think I’m starting to experience anxiety that’s what causing my heart rate to go up.

    • BB-Creplying to Ameroon45 years ago

I take a very very low dose of metoprolol for my heart rate and palpitations. My blood pressure is already low. I also have Diazepam for times of panic or extreme anxiety. I don’t want to be on a regular anti-anxiety med bc I’m not anxious all the time. Knowing I have the diazepam seems to help and I don’t even need to take it.

Hi Ameroon4, I have high blood pressure and take ranipril. My heart rate was faster for the first half of this year which is pretty much when I realised I was in peri. It’s since settled down. I find doing some gentle exercise helps to lower it, I use an exercise bike for 20 mins a day. I also drink less coffee which does helps too.

    • Ameroon45 years ago

Thanks Caroline, I now drink decaf coffee and I walk during my lunch hour to get get some exercise in my day.

  • Tina5 years ago

Hiya, yes your not on your own, it’s really frightening isn’t it? I’m on beta blockers, to slow my heart rate down, anxiety is through the roof... not really sure why this is happening, I think it’s all my hormones.

    • Ameroon45 years ago

I really think that’s the culprit Tina. We just have to let it ride it’s course.

    • Redreplying to Ameroon45 years ago

You don’t have to let it ride it’s course, if you aren’t already on it, you can ask for hormone replacement therapy.

    • Red5 years ago

If it is your hormones, your best if to try hormone replacement therapy.

Tina, I too have high blood pressure since I became post menopausal. When I drank acv + lemon, my blood pressure became normal again. When I stopped this routine, my bp went up again after a little time. I am going back to drinking this drink since I want to be & feel healthy as long as I live. Naturopathic option: Try drinking a Tablespoon of apple cider vinegar with 1/2 lemon juice in 16 oz of lukewarm water. The lemon helps mask the Easter egg smell when drinking. See if it helps. Of course, in addition to what your doctor advises. Look it up online. There are way more reasons/benefits to drinking acv and lemon juice.

    • Daphnereplying to Susan5 years ago

Thanks for that tip. I will try it.

    • Katyreplying to Susan5 years ago

      What is acv???

    • Pattyreplying to Katy4 years ago

      Apple cider vinegar

    • Sasreplying to Katy4 years ago

Apple cider vinegar. Supposedly you should buy the one with “the Mother” in it.

I had very high BP whilst on holiday in Cyprus last Aug and was hospitalised as it was 210/158 - I didn’t realise apart from I didn’t feel quite right abs I used to get very large veins in my head. Periods had started to be a little sporadic but nothing I could put down to peri men - I was put on amlopodine early this year as BP was high and then just as we hit 1st lockdown in March 2020 I realised I was probably peri menopause- I do think the BP is related as for years ie since I was 21 and now 53 it had always been 110/70 even when stressed.

    • Ameroon45 years ago

      Hope you are doing better.

    • Macreplying to Ameroon45 years ago

I am doing ok now thank you and BP seems to be under control - thank you for asking ?

  • Ameroon45 years ago

That was the first thing he did was made me wear a heart monitor. He told me it could be my anxiety that cause my reading to be so high

  • BB-C5 years ago

I was having a faster heart rate and adrenaline surges. Discovered my estrogen was a little high and I have the COMT mutation. My endocrinologist explained that those combined don’t allow the adrenaline to leave my body as quickly as it should so it makes my heart beat faster. I’m on a very low dose of metoprolol, which has helped. And I’m taking DIM to help manage the estrogen and flush out adrenaline.

    • Ray5 years ago

Is be interested to hear how your would describe these adrenaline surges, I think I may be having them . Thanks

    • BB-Creplying to Ray5 years ago

Ray- they come on suddenly like a wave and then I feel my heart beating faster which makes me anxious and panic. If it is a bad one, I will get jittery and shake. Sometimes I feel nauseous (but not like I’m going to throw up) and will burp and have to go to the bathroom urgently. Hands may get sweaty or clammy too. Fight or flight symptoms.

    • Tishreplying to BB-C4 years ago

I get the same exact symptoms. My PCP doesn’t think I need to see a endocrinologist and didn’t give me a referral. So I’ve been going to my Naturalpathic doctor and she given me progesterone & Testosterone to balance out the higher levels of estrogen. What a journey can’t wait for the light at the end of the tunnel .?

    • Katy5 years ago

Yes I take 25 mg metoprolol- helps. How about you?

    • Tish4 years ago

Did your endocrinologist prescribe the low dose of metoprolol?

  • Christie5 years ago

Mine dropped when I got back on my b-12 supplement

Have you had heavy periods lately? I had several heavy long periods in a row which gave me anemia. One of the symptoms of anemia is palpitations. I would be just sitting and notice my heart rate would climb up over 100 beats per minute and stay that way for several minutes. As my iron levels have increased from taking an iron supplement, I don’t have this problem anymore.

    • Jennifer5 years ago

I literally just came here to say this same thing. I think this is what’s going on with me.

    • Jahnine5 years ago

Omg! I was deferred when giving blood last month due to low iron.... I wonder if this is contributing to my much higher resting heart rate lately???

  • Carric5 years ago

I just realized I have had what is high pressure for me since Sept. normally I am 116/68 and my ranges have been in the 130’s/68. I can feel my heart pounding in my Chet harder and I hate the feeling it makes me have more anxiety as I get scared something else is wrong. I don’t know if it is just menopause or if something else is wrong. Why do I feel like a hypochondriac most days since being in menopause? Feel like I am cray cray some days ?

    • Jennifer5 years ago

This is me too lol. Also I’ve developed asthma symptoms and I’ve experienced a rare side effect of even more heart palpitations with every medication they’ve tried on me!

    • Nikky5 years ago

I have had increased palpitations and my heart rate goes fast during hot flashes. I’ve gone to cardiologist and everything is okay. I’ve read since that these can be part of the symptoms of our beloved menopause.

    • Daphne5 years ago

      Same

    • Jayne5 years ago

I feel your frustration! Menopause needs its own zip code & it’s not taken very seriously.

    • Rose4 years ago

OMG, me too and also with the asthma symptoms. What do we do?

  • Jennifer5 years ago

Has anyone noticed that they can feel their heart beating more pronounced? Especially when leaning back against a chair, I can feel my heart beating.

    • BessfromAL5 years ago

I hear my heartbeat in my ears when I first lie down.

    • Val4 years ago

Yes my heart rate and heartbeat I can feel it more rappingly now since I’ve been having menopause. You’re not the only one that’s going to this song really just make sure that you have a heart specialist and you keep up with them so you will have a heart attack. Or irregular heartbeat

    • Ayesh3 years ago

Lol! I feel my heartbeat in my teeth!

  • Magda5 years ago

Not a doctor but I was having heart palpitations and pounding heart at night. I started taking Magnesium (3 huge horse pills, but) and it resolved.

    • Nitza5 years ago

      Hello. What was the dosage?

    • Jill5 years ago

I take Magnesium as well after a trip to the hospital and an appt with cardiologist and many tests. It made a huge difference.

    • Sasha4 years ago

      Thanks for the magnesium tip.

  • Lisa5 years ago

Worrying about it can naturally increase it. Try use some calming meditation , take walks in natural surroundings , do gentle breathing exercises, if your checking it at home yourself make sure you do it at a time your relaxed and haven’t just been rushing around ! You can still give yourself white coat syndrome at home lol x

  • Candace5 years ago

First, talk to your doctor about what is going on. Second, look into a whole food plant based diet-oil free and salt free. It has helped me so much. I haven’t taken anything other than b12 in years and I feel great!

  • Rebecca5 years ago

Hi I have an idea how you feel. Yoga and meditation definitely helping me get through this. I write down how I feel , what gives me joy and gratitude. My heart is racing too. It got so bad the other day I rang the doctor in tears. They checked my blood pressure and did an ECG. It was all fine but heart rate fast. I’m on propanol tablets for a month. I am waiting for blood tests to see if I am going through the menopause. I don’t know what the hell is wrong with me but it’s scary. I think if meditation does not work ring the doctors again, Tale time for you .

  • Lorraine Murphy5 years ago

I have high blood pressure n a high heart rate n sometimes it runs away with itself leading to panic attacks

  • Ray5 years ago

Yep. Cardiac issues cause me the most anxiety. Had three episodes of prolonged tachycardia (super fast heart rate). Trips to A&E to get it stabilised . Also during the day I suffer form several short bursts of fast rhythm. Referred to cardiology, diagnosed with SVT, this was caught on a five day holter monitor. The Cardiologist ....well HE looked at me blankly when I asked if it was related to the menopause. I must admit I’ve always had a sensitive heart rate all my life . I’m on Beta blockers, they keep experimenting with the dosage. I have noticed though that my blood pressure has started to creep up despite whatever dosage I’m on. Heart anxiety will rule your life , my advice is just get it checked out, speak to your GP fist but put yer big girl pants on, be strong and firm, plan what you want to get out of the consultation and don’t let them fob you off.

    • Chris5 years ago

You are so right about the big girl pants Ray! It’s like getting blood out of a stone to get GP to take a holistic approach to a sudden onset of high blood pressure - only caught because I got 15 nose bleeds in a month out of the blue. I had just had a period after six months of none during which time I could think straight for the first time in three years! All very scary with two trips to A&E one for nose bleed, other because I felt someone was sitting on my chest, palpitations and chronic headache, mega hot flashes, cold flashes and weeping. Nothing physically wrong strangely except my blood pressure 190/107 and heart pounding - am I stressed asks the A&E doc?!! After a year of lockdowns I’m not in the best place but my main stress is not getting to talk sense to my gp! So yes this thing can spiral out of control quickly! BP better on 10mg Ramipril but still working on the anxiety and depression which seems to be worse than ever now my exercise regime been shot to pieces. Really interesting to find on here it could be the menopause.

    • BB-C5 years ago

Ray - I was diagnosed with a mild and infrequent SVT. I was told hormones could cause them. Along with stress and caffeine. I have about 4 PACS/PVCS almost everyday. Definitely have more of these since becoming perimenopausal.

  • BessfromAL5 years ago

Every doctor has dismissed my new symptom of heart palpitations.

  • BessfromAL5 years ago

I use my Apple Watch to give me alerts for a rapid heart beat while I am inactive. It’s alerted me twice.

  • Gwyn5 years ago

Definitely experiencing this a lot. I’m 53 and periods stopped about 5 years ago, and at that time I developed a goitre and discovered (after 6 months of increasingly feeling very ill and exhausted), that I was severely hypothyroid. Since then I have been taking thyroxin, but I am never sure if the fast heartbeat is because I’m over medicated/under medicated (it can be a symptom of both!) or the menopause? Lots of brain fog and forgetfulness too...?

    • Carla4 years ago

I totally relate to you! Also have hypothyroidism and am often confused: is it the hypho or the menopause? Or both? Have the feeling they are not really prepared to help us…

  • Kim5 years ago

I suffer from episodes of an accelerated heart rate and have for years. Oddly my blood pressure never rises with these episodes but I can feel my heart beating in my chest - so disconcerting- and it’s usually between 105 and 112 bpm when this happens. When I’m ‘normal’ it typically runs 85 bpm.

  • Kim5 years ago

Hi, I had a heart palpitations and that caused so me much anxiety . I’ve been to A&E 3 times with high blood pressure but everything was normal in the end, now I have stopped taking caffeinated drinks at all and celery juice in the morning has helped me a lot ?

  • Nicky5 years ago

I had a resting heart rate of 123 bpm so I got put on Bisoprolol. It’s brilliant and works perfectly. Ask your GP.

  • Jahnine5 years ago

Hmmm, I just down loaded this app. I’m 51 and have noticed on my Fitbit that my resting heart rate has moved from low 70’s (even high 60’s when I’m regularly exercising hard) to mid-80’s. My blood pressure remains regular and low. At first I thought it was added stress in my work life (teacher) but now you have me thinking.... has anyone seen their doctor? What has been the result?

  • Jen5 years ago

Anyone else getting‘washing machine’ head? I’m peri menopausal and just recently started getting light headed with a pounding heart.

    • Jenn5 years ago

Get it checked out!! That’s how my ordeal started!!

  • Carlyn5 years ago

I have found Lara Briden’s books a godsend! I first read The Period Tepair Manual and just got The Hormone Book

  • Cindy5 years ago

Last night I had to call the ambulance. I had been struggling with breathing but the doctors could not find anything serious. I woke up went to the bathroom took my neurophen that was helping but suddenly i could not breathe and my heart started beating faster. I thought I would die. When the ambulance arrived J had settled a bit but then it happened with them there. They assured me I was getting oxygen but again they could find anything wrong. I’ve been feeling unwell for about 4 weeks but the difficulty breathing happened about 2 weeks ago. I only just found out that this could be menopause related. Has anyone else experienced this?

    • BB-C5 years ago

Cindy - are you really unable to breathe or do you just feel like you cannot? It sounds like you can bc your oxygen levels were fine when tested by the EMT. I’ve had this with anxiety and panic resulting from adrenaline surges. If I try to take a deep breath I can, but I feel like I cannot breathe. I have a friend who has the same thing. I actually hyperventilated once in this situation.

    • BB-C5 years ago

I have heard of many women, myself included, who have felt like they can’t take a deep breath. Peri and hormones can cause this. That feeling then causes panic which will make your heart beat faster. When this happens, I feel better when I lie flat, try to expand my chest, and take slow deep breaths. I tell myself I am breathing.

  • Tippy5 years ago

I experienced high blood pressure 187/102 with a resting heart rate of 103 I’m Not on any treatment yet

  • Val5 years ago

Yes, my heart rate is going fast then every and my blood pressure is up. I take medicine but it not working.

  • Betsylee5 years ago

I think you should maybe go and see the doctor, they’ll be able to tell you if it’s anxiety or something else. I had a very rapid heart best and found out I had something called paroxysmal atrial fibrillation. Best to get it checked.

  • Jayne5 years ago

I hit 51 & suddenly started with palpitations that are killer…I take propanalol which helps but that too has it’s own side effects that seem to worsen my severely chronic insomnia!

  • Tara5 years ago

My blood pressure has been fluctuating. It’s always been on the low side. Now im getting reading of 140/78 which is so rare for me. Then I had a reading of 108/54. I have also developed skin allergies which I have never had before. I feel like im allergic to my own body.

  • Karen5 years ago

I have high blood pressure and my resting heart rate was 100. On meds my BP is now normally 140/85 and my heart rate has now dropped to 84. Still feel like it’s racing though sometimes

  • Garianne5 years ago

I am having the same issues!! Gave myself a panic attack over the higher blood pressure and feeling that odd sensation in my chest/ lungs... dr told me it’s anxiety ??‍♀️ And it happens and it’s ok... but it still feels annoying and crappy...

  • Dawn5 years ago

I’ve had the same, last year I went To a cardiologist and he did every test possible. Everything is normal, I take metoprolol as needed, a water pill and that seems to help. Removing carbs from my diet has helped a lot of my symptoms, including hot flashes.

  • Emily5 years ago

Yes my resting is 140 when it’s meant to be 60 I’m not sure what it is either! I thought I had diabetes

  • Jenn5 years ago

In April this year I ended up in the ER and eventually they admitted me later that day. My BP was 221/124 and the nurses kept telling me they didn’t know how I didn’t stroke or have a heart attack. I had bad nausea and dizziness for two days before that incident, never once occurred to me that it was BP. I am perimenopausal and like some of you have commented, I feel like I’m falling apart. My resting heart rate fluctuates between 95-107. I am on BP meds but I stopped taking the one for my heart rate…it completely kills the libido! Didn’t like that. I do have to take it easier now, I watch my target heart rate when I’m working out, I drink a gallon of water everyday, and learning how to deal with the stress in my life rather than bottling it up inside. I hope you find a good doctor…don’t let your BP or heart rate go unchecked!!

  • Nicole5 years ago

Yes I am always waking up with serious heart palpitations!! My heart is pounding through my chest it totally frightened me and I never new it may due to this!!!

  • Patty4 years ago

I also feel like my heart races just out of the blue, with minimal activity and it leaves me feeling breathless. I hate it. I hope it will stop when I am going through menopause. It makes me not even want to exercise or do anything strenuous for fear of it getting even higher. It almost feels like I’ve been exercising when I have not. I’ve been to a cardiologist for a full work up and even had a calcium scan which was completely negative, reading of zero. So according to the cardiologist my heart is completely healthy. But I will go from sitting to standing and doing minimal activity and Suddenly my heart feels like it’s racing and will be in the 120s. Sometimes i At rest of my heart rate is normal, in the 70s and 80s but often it’s in the high 90s. I hate this feeling.

  • Me4 years ago

Yes, this autumn. Palpitations when I was laying down. I also got insomnia. I quit coffee and dont drink alcohol. Started to exerxise an changed my work situation. I think my symtoms were related to my job. The symtoms are gone.

  • Val4 years ago

Since I have had menopause, my heart rate half and blood pressure have went up streamly . I’m even having a minor heart surgery to take another surgery. Because I scared my colon doctor today of my sugar went from 80 to 199. I had went to our heart specialist and I will be having surgery soon. I think it’s because of my menopause it’s been going on for two years and my body is really changing.

  • Victoria4 years ago

Hi thank you for sharing. I’m new on here but found the topics so helpful. You are not alone! My blood pressure has shot up from normal to 140/90 to 166/104 during a test at hospital after a fall so that should explain the hike. My heart races at night usually around 100 bpm but up to 115 bpm It’s so scary. I was awake so much last night trying to calm it down. When I was asleep I was having scary nightmares. Waking up sweating and heart pounding. I have a iwatch so I can track my heart rate. Thinking what I ate and drank last night (red wine a wee glass of port and a chocolate pudding, well it was Valentine’s Day) I can’t ignore the possible culprit. After reading another topic on here I think there may be a link to red wine. I love red wine!! But I’m going to stop for a bit to see if that helps. The good news is gin can be okay so they say. I’m also going to cut down on sugar. It all seems a bit depressing however I think I have come to the stage where I can’t ignore these symptoms any longer. The same as you I’m getting scared. My bp is a real worry. I don’t always trust doctors. I feel we know our bodies better. Menopause isn’t something doctors and nurses as specialists at. I guess you have to take charge and responsibility for your body yourself. These posts have really opened my eyes. Knowing I’m not alone makes me feel so much better. I can’t thank you & everyone enough for sharing your experiences. ?

  • Claire4 years ago

I had a few episodes of a racing heart and was referred to a cardiologist- I wore a 48 hour ecg monitor which caused me more anxiety and a constant pounding heart that kept me awake. It turned out there was nothing wrong but my gp thinks the initial issue was perimenopause related. Do get it checked out though- if anything it will put your mind at rest.
