Hi ladies, I’ve been dying my hair for the last 25 years. For those who are also used to dying, how have you learnt to grow into your grey hair?

I know exactly what you mean, I wonder the same thing. The trick is to go lighter when you colour your hair next. If you use shop colour, choose the next shade lighter (the higher the first number the lighter the shade) if your hair is very dark, I would recommend a salon visit. Maybe a full head of highlights to give you an overall lighter appearance, let the grey appear. I am 54 (and a hairdresser) I still colour my roots but have gone much lighter so when my white hair comes through naturally it’s not such a contrast.

This is exactly what I did - baby light blonde highlights all over in the salon. It was expensive - totally worth it. Made growing out my silver an easy transition without much awkward growing out stage. The silver is so pretty and I get compliments on it too!

I stopped coloring 1yr ago and love it. Wish I did it sooner. Once you get past the awkward phase, it’s easy. Typically takes about 2 yrs to grow out.

Same as my sister. Covid pandemic locked down so she let her grey hair grew and now after two years her hair natural color salt and pepper looks gorgeous. I can’t wait someday I could do like her. Because right now I still have a lots of stocked up hair color supplies, so I’m going to let my grey hair grow after those supplies is gone.

It’s a total mindset thing. I was tired of dying my hair for so many years. I just got to the point where I decided to quit the dye process because I was just sick of it and it’s not cheap! I searched high and low for help with the gray grow out process. There is no good trick. I had dark hair. I had to just say F’it and let it go. I would suggest keeping it on the shorter side (left mine shoulder length) and just trim it every other month. Also, depending on your color, highlights may help as they tend to help blend with lighter hair. Hopefully your hairdresser can suggest something for you. Good luck.

Just embrace it ? I use to get mine professionally coloured then Covid hit I wasn’t sure about using home kits and just went with it best thing I have ever done I have had some lovely positive comments wish I had done it sooner would have saved a fortune ?.

I’m the same, having dark hair and growing into being a silver fox. However my hairdresser wouldn’t do lighter highlights as I wanted ash highlights. She was worried it would turn yellow. So it’s all natural, some days it’s so hard as I want the process finished, I’ve now adjusting as I’ve realised dying is a short and instant process we are so used too. On another note I do get paranoid and think when people are speaking to me they are looking at my greys. When I get asked why … my comment is I’d prefer to have a lot of grey hair than lose hair (side effect of peri-menopause) + Ive realised I was colouring the silvers for others not me. I’ve just bought a purple mask but with my hair being dark not sure it’ll work. There’s some great accounts on Instagram just search #silver#going grey etc, Goodluck

A good hairdresser should be able to match your natural grey with foils ( especially the top and hairline) lots of fine white blond highlights against a dark low light and you just keep toning with purple shampoo & conditioner ☺️
Bec4 years ago
Hi Myra I was over the maintenance, regrowth and chemical use of routine hair dying. I had long hair that I had cut to a short bob then let it grow a bit, then trim short and repeat, and repeat etc. The top layer of hair I had some light fine foils put in to blend the light greys with my out growing warm ish brown. I also followed an Instagram page with people growing out their grey hair to keep me motivated. I’m pretty comfortable with the grey now (still get a few pangs for colour, but use a curling iron to give my hair a few cute waves and off I go) and love that I’m not caught up in the constant dying cycle. I’m aiming for natural, healthy hair. Best wishes with the transition. NB Just search grey hair on Insta x

For the first three months of 2020 I was really sick with a “bad flu” that took an additional six months to get out of my system. Yes, probably COVID. That first 3 months of roots showed me what I used to cover with “dark blonde” dye (redKen half 8/half 9) as “grey” is now white. French braiding helps tuck the dark ends underneath and looks really cool . The best thing I did was “grey blending” at the hairdresser. I wish I could attach photos. It made the transition seamless. I just looked more and more “platinum”. I also created a “grey blonde” Pinterest board. Good luck! It makes getting ready in the morning SO much easier. You’ll want to condition and treat your hair a lot over the two year grow in. Saw a magnificent silver sister on wheel of fortune a few nights ago that kept me inspired. When my cousins 13 year old told me I was “on trend,” I knew I could stick with it. Here’s an article on blending: https://www.glamour.com/story/gray-blending-hair-highlights/amp

I did this a few years ago. I wear my hair short so it grew out quite quickly and, thanks to lockdowns where hardly anyone saw it anyway, now it’s all gone. I call the greys sparkles.

Hair is so personal that you have to be ready to ditch the dye. I’ve had grey hair coming in since I was in my late 20s. I dyed for so long I didn’t know my natural color was dark brown! When I was in my early 40s (in 2015) I decided on letting my hair grow natural, and my husband was so happy! He asked me to grow it natural for years, but I wasn’t ready. I have salt and pepper with silver-white framing my face. I was growing out a short cut so it made it easier, and I’m sure it helped that grey hair was popular at the time. Around the 9 month grow out, my stylist lightened my hair from the demarcation line- somewhere around my middle ear- and added a demipermanent color all over. That was the last time dye was on my hair. I was happy I did that but honestly, totally bummed that it covered the silver, however it washed off, albeit much longer than I expected. If I was doing the process now, I’d probably have that done earlier in the grow out. When I look at photos of myself when I dyed, my hair always looks dull, flat, and lacks dimension. I know this sounds complicated self centered but I’ve never before received more compliments on my hair than now. Men, women, younger people stop and ask where I get it cut (sometimes colored! Haha). I never thought my silver hair would make me feel beautiful. I was met with strong opposition from my older (hair stylist) sister, stating I’d look “20 years older”! She ended up eating her words after the transition process was complete. I say do what YOU really want. There will be people who support you and others who don’t. At the end of the day, it’s just hair so you can dye it back if you want. I have found that I had to change up my makeup a bit and I tend to wear brighter lipstick.

I went cold turkey in 2020! If you’re on Instagram follow the #silversisters There are so many encouraging women who have been there or are going through it now. Two great tips I have learned is to occasionally use a purple shampoo to keep the silvers from turning yellow and use a heat protector if you blow dry or curl/flatiron your hair, for the same reason. Also, if you spend a lot of time in the sun…wear a hat to protect your hair too. Best of luck!! I will be two years in September! Unfortunately I caved in to the dye in August 2020 (after 8 months ??♀️) when I had to take my daughter back to college.

I suggest joining a Facebook group like Silver Revolution. I have been inspired by all of the beautiful photos of peoples gray growth journeys. And everyone is so supportive. It really can be beautiful as it grows out. Enjoy it !

I have gone for a silver dye but I only do the mud section to the ends and not the roots these I have left to turn white grey and the contrast is lovely, I am really please. I have the ends cut and so as the roots grow out the colour will eventually be all mine!! Such a lovely stage but can be tough to begin with. Sending support ladies

I’m in the same boat. I have long hair and I get my hair colored by my stylist every six months and I do the roots by myself in between. My hair stylist and I have come up with a plan to lighten my hair gradually over the next few years…I figure once I’ve gone they the peri menopause stage I’ll enter through the menopause door with gorgeous silver locks. Happy Transitioning.

I was worried sick about going grey and kept putting it off. When we went into lockdown I realised that it was the perfect time! It took about 2 years to grow out. I really love it now and get lots of compliments! Make the decision, stick with it and you will be glad that you did!

Honestly, it’s been a struggle. I finally decided to quit dying it about 1 1/2 years ago. I also decided the same time that I was going to let it grow out for the first time in MANY YEARS. I finally have all of the color out, it looks much healthier, much shinier and super soft! For the first time in more years than I can remember. I take biotin daily and have been for about 3-4 months. It has helped dramatically as well! After seeing the streaks of silver and they way they weave through, I have finally embraced them. I use minimal products. And I do not regret it. I am truly starting to love the way they flow.

I stopped coloring because of the pandemic. I was having it done and then I stopped going to a hair dresser (I never did it myself.) I also moved (back to Seattle) from the east coast so the lifestyle here also lended itself to not being too “done up.” I’m 48 and had been highlighting my hair with my hair color to lessen the amount of grey. That was great and an easy way to let it go longer than full coloring and for growing it out. Plus it’s harder to see the line you get when your hair grows.

I’m 51. I braved the shave a few years ago and stopped dying mine when it started to grow back. I go back and forth in my mind about dying it again but it’s such a hassle. My hair is really short and a lovely colour. I try to make sure I keep it in a short funky style. I’m young on the inside and want to look that way… grey or no grey.

I started getting grey hair at the age of 17, just like all the other females in my family. I colored my hair for about 15 years, until one day I looked around, or started paying attention to other women. Women older than me, and I really payed attention to their grey hair and I thought “These women are stunning” and I guess it was an eye opener for me because it was then that I said “I’m not going through all this crap to cover up my grey hair.” I haven’t colored my hair since, I’m 54, totally grey & I’ve embraced it.

I go back & forth on embracing my “diamonds”… on one hand I’d love to go natural & not deal with dying my hair & all that goes with it, on the other hand I think I’d miss the fun dark pink streaks. Also my skin is rather fair & I worry that the silver will make me look washed out/older than I am & older than I feel. I love the #silver inspiration & the community you all bring to the peri-menopause “experience”. I’m going to check out the Insta recommendations you lovely ladies have shared & hope it’ll help give me the courage to take the leap! Thank you all for sharing your stories!

Been flaunting my nature’s highlights for almost 4 years now and I’m loving the progress. It was a little rough when first growing them out, a lot of people (especially in my family) kept telling me to dye it again. I’m so glad I kept on, now I get compliments all the time and my hair stylist is always raving about how people would want to have my hair color but there’s no way to do it chemically.

I stopped dying my hair at the beginning of the pandemic..and I’ve never looked back! I went cold turkey so wore my hair up a lot. I’m not going to lie - I had some bad hair days! I followed a bunch of silver sisters on social media which really helped. I actually look better and younger now than I did with orangey brown fake hair!

Hi Everyone! This is my first day on the app and so excited to be sharing thoughts and experiences, and offer support where I can with other women whom are going through the mid life thing as I go through it. I just turned 51 in August and the 2nd to youngest child (all girls). I am the first to have my periods stop, the grey hair and definitely my mom coming out in my moods as we watched her go through it. So about the greys, I was in my 20 something’s when I first started growing my naturally beautiful grey long (hair was all one length) bang. Yes bang that is one very skinny ponytail from the front of my hairline. I asked my mom why it wasn’t coming in all over and she said hers had started the same way but was very short lived. I did dye my hair at this time in my life, just because I like changing it up. Long story short, I researched my strand of grey and discovered it is part of our heritage which is predominantly Irish and Cherokee Indian. Best advice I can give on this is to just go with it. Every single one of us will go through all the graceful changes God intended us to go through and we will survive it. Embrace every change and every moment like it is the last because you never know what tomorrow will bring. ❤️

I am 52 and I had one gray hair on my 51st b-day. I take MSM and believe it has helped stave off the grays. The one I had has gone away. One tablespoon a day. (MethylSulphonylMethane - organic sulfur) Great for your heart as well.

I’m hating every minute of it. I think I’m not grey enough- have a great stripe at the front on both sides, but very salt & pepper everywhere else… it’s lucky that I’m not flush with cash right now or I’d defo cave (and I know I’d regret that too)! ??

I was told by a friend who happened to work in the fashion industry that women were paying large sums of money to get what I can grow naturally. It stopped me immediately from dyeing my hair anymore. I have had natural Brown with grey ‘highlights’ for over 20 years, I’m 45. I love it. It’s starting to become a beautiful silver, and the grey is becoming curly. Although awkward at times, it’s mine. I earned every single one of my grey hairs. I love them because they are mine!

I stopped coloring my hair during the pandemic. I’ve always had longer hair and I really didn’t want to cut it short. When it had grown out about 1.5 inches I had a service done strip out the color and then re-add color to every few strands. Finally they put in a silver colored toner that looked fantastic. I got lots of compliments. The service took about 9 hours to complete and it cost me about $500. But it saved me a couple of years of growing out the skunk stripe and made it so I didn’t have to go with short hair. For me it was 100% worth it and I’d make the same decision again if I had to go back in time. Today all of the dyed hair is gone and I can maintain it myself. I do put in a silver toner at home once every few weeks which helps keep it soft and bright.

In July 2022 I did a perm something I was dying to do with my ex-boyfriend would never allow me to, I left him in mid 2021. Then in September 2022 I stop dying my hair after 29 years of dying my hair I just felt it was time to stop. Now on my birthday in May I will be cutting off all of that damaged hair from the perm and the dyes. I honestly can not wait, but very scared I never had my hair that short. Wish me luck!

What happens when you have lighter colored hair because I am like a light brown and I am 50% gray in front and 15% in the back and I want to start going gray. I currently color and I’m tired of it thinking of coloring it the gray that it will go to so the transition isn’t so hard. Anybody ever try that?
Jules2 years ago
It will probably be easier than you think. Most people seem to have more silvers at the front so you could try just adding a few lighter highlights at the front, while you transition, so the silvers are like a third colour coming through with lots of sparkle. That’s what I did, and it definitely helped me get used to the idea. Then after 6 months I just stopped dying completely. Really it’s just what ever it takes to build your confidence to go for.

I started dying my hair when I was 14, and it honestly killed my hair. I started going gray in my early 20's. I tried keeping color over it because I didn't want to be a white haired 25 year old but the color would last maybe a month and there wod be spots throughout my hair because they gray just wouldn't hold. I always kept my hair short anyway so the color maintenance was just ridiculous to me. I always had stylists tell me "Oh don't stay gray...you need to keep coloring." but I just stopped after I shaved my head when my friend was diagnosed with cancer. Most all of my hair is white in the front with a gray/salt & pepper in the back. I get so many compliments now as opposed to before. Younger women who try to dye their hair gray ask me who does my hair. I still am told by stylists to not promote natural hair but I still do. I would never tell someone what they should do but if it's something they want to try, do it...it's just hair. If you don't like it, go back to coloring.

I let my hair go grey after Covid. I had been thinking about it for a couple of years. I love it & people often comment on how much they love the colour. I wish I had gone grey sooner!
Courtney3 years ago
I’m throwing money at the transition. At this point I’m over 50% grey (at 38!) and I’m working with a colourist to transition my hair to its natural colour. First we stripped all the box dye out of my hair. Next session we will do a full highlight, going as light as we can without damaging my hair and trying as much as possible to match the highlights to where the grey is. This may take 2 or 3 highlight sessions. Once it’s done, though, I’ll have my natural dark brown colour mixed with white (my hair is going white which I think is so cool) highlights, and aside from regular toning to combat the natural yellowing of the highlights, I’ll have my full length of hair and I’ll be able to just keep going grey naturally.

I don’t understand fighting nature by dying hair. I’ve never dyed my hair, and the grey is just now coming in (43) and I’m totally fine with it. Maybe it’s because I have Asperger’s that I just don’t get why Neurotypicals hate their hair color. I know some women dye it as a form of self expression, but most seem to do it out of a lack of self love.

I decided when I had to change my hairstyle as the current one was destroying my hair follicles as I was wearing extensions. I began by speaking to a few women who had decided to embrace being grey. I also had to come to terms with having a new hairstyle that exposed my new roots after 6 weeks. I just did it. I started by blending my grey hair with my dyed hair and as it grew out I added more grey. I also changed my makeup and wore clothes that complimented the grey hair.
Jules2 years ago
That’s a really great point - having a different hair colour means you can try different make up and clothes choices. For me now, brighter colours look so much better on me than neutrals. I feel bolder with my choices.

I’m 57. My aunts and cousins my age have beautiful white hair. Mine is naturally white only in the front all the way around my face. The rest is mostly a dull medium brown with white strands. I tried dying it all brown for years, but after a couple of weeks the white always came back. My hair dresser and I decided to transition to white with a blonde weave instead. She leaves the white alone and weaves two shades of blonde into the rest. I can now go about 3 months between colorings. When I have more white than dark, I’ll stop coloring and embrace the white.

I grew mine out during COVID like many others. It was a difficult transition, constantly doubting myself. My husband was very supportive and encouraged me. I was determined to go through with it completely and figured if I still didn’t like it I would go back to coloring it. Once it grew out, I LOVED it! Plus my hair is so much healthier, shiny, and has gotten thicker!

I was 16 when I noticed a few gray hairs by the age of 18 I was dying my hair. I have had black hair, red hair, brown hair even tried blonde (will never go there again). I have never been thrilled with the idea of growing older, so I was constantly dying my hair and using sprays and pastes to cover all the little grays that would show in between dying. I am now 45 years old, perimenopausal and recently diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. I can’t dye my hair anymore and it has been six months since I colored my hair. Even though my hair is still thin, it looks and feels healthier and it doesn’t fall out as much. I still could not come to grips with letting it go gray. I started getting compliments on how beautiful it looked and how going naturally is more beautiful and sexy than using a box to get gray hair. That really helped me accept the plunge and has allowed me to grow into the transition.

I started transitioning from dyeing every 5 weeks to my natural color about a year. In preparation, and to help transition from the dark brown that I had been using for years, to my natural salt and pepper, I found a hair dresser who had experience working with gray hair do some high lights to help blend and minimize the severity of the transition. I think this helped a lot as I never had a period of not liking the grow out. I did two highlighting sessions about 3 months apart so we could try and match my natural pattern. Then, I went to just toning the highlights to match my grays. I stopped dying altogether about 6 months ago, and probably still have a year until I am all grown out. I had a dream the other night that I had dyed my hair dark again, and I was so devastated at the thought of starting the process all over again. I was so relieved when I woke up, and know that I will never go back to dying.
Heather2 years ago
I stopped coloring my hair last year, and have discovered a mix of light brown, silver, and white. What’s worked for me so far based on recommendations from my very supportive stylist: 1) I got ashy highlights to blend the gray initially to help soften the hard transition line as it grew out. 2) I keep it well conditioned, as natural gray hair can sometimes be more coarse. 3) I use a purple shampoo and conditioner plus a shine spray to help keep the color bright and healthy looking (gray hair doesn’t reflect light as much as dark hair, so it can look dull). 4) I changed up my style a bit so it felt less blah. It’s an adjustment process, and some days are harder than others because of all the usual insecurities. People have been super supportive though and I get lots of compliments, so if you decide now is the time, try to stick it out through the awkward phase.

I’m 48 with blonde/light brown hair, but my white is growing in fairly solidly at the roots.. not just salt and peppering. I know when I’m ready, I will have my stylist slowly add white/gray or platinum very thin highlights to my hair, for ease of transition!
