What's causing spider and vericose veins?

I'm really concerned about the varicose and spider veins that seem to be appearing on my legs overnight. Is this also connected to menopause? Are other ladies having this problem and is there anything I can do about it?!

It's happening to me too, but I gad them mildly before my surgery. I don't know what to do about it. I think it gets worse when you spend a lot of time on your feet.

I’ve just noticed the same happening at the back of one of my knees. I’m wondering if crossing my legs has caused it as that’s the leg I cross. But maybe it’s hormones?

I had them for years before menopause; I try not to look much (because my skin has gotten so thin that cuts and bruises such take a long time to go away)! I’ve read about some injections, though I can’t recall what was in them, but I think it was relatively mild.

Hi Pauline, I definitely understand your concern. Varicose veins occur when your vessels become dilated due to changes in the cellular structure that makes up the walls of your veins (for example, they can become less elastic). We don't fully know the causes because there aren't a lot of studies yet, but changing levels in female sex hormones are thought to play an important role. This makes sense because women often develop them in pregnancy and menopause. For strategies, try to avoid standing or sitting in one place for a long time and stay physically active to keep your blood circulating (as opposed to pooling). Some good activities include walking, cycling running, or swimming. It’s always a good idea to check in with your doctor to see if there are ways to help prevent varicose veins, such as through balancing your hormones with HRT (no present studies on this) or other medical treatments. Keep us posted on your progress!

Me too! So much so I had a recent sclerotherapy done for my varicose veins and need to finish up with a clean-up on my spider veins. The procedure was pretty straightforward but I do fear I may have to do it again with all these hormonal shifts.

I have a question for you about the procedure you did for your spider veins so I’m having the same issues as everyone else on here and have been in menopause for almost 2yrs now at 48yrs old and I’m getting more and more veins showing up it seems like every time I look in the mirror lol and I have never had one vein on my legs prior to menopause and I’m a hairstylist and have been for 31 years now and have stood up more hours than I could even count so I’m starting to think it is because of menopause and not work related because I would’ve had them years ago in my opinion but I’m not a doctor so I could be wrong! So my question is do you recommend the procedure you had done for your veins and how many sessions did it take and is it super expensive and how painful is it? I’m trying to figure out what I need to do to get these ugly things gone but don’t want to waist money obviously and definitely don’t want to experience a lot of pain doing it even though I’m getting really sick of looking at them! Thanks for your input it helps us lady’s out I appreciate it!

I have spider veins appearing on my legs since I turned 40 . I am now 43 . I believe change in hormones has some contributing factor towards spider veins .

I’m experiencing a lot of changes rapidly, including getting more spider veins. I’m on my feet most of the day which I assumed was the cause (along with age). Then out of nowhere I kept having some serious edema in my legs, ankles, feet which then resulted in varicose veins as well. This is a first for me, and I’m curious to know if hormones are to blame? I’m realizing what hormones are capable of. So many things suddenly make sense as I’m learning in depth about menopause.
