Surprising symptoms?

Like most women, I expected menopause to come with hot flashes and night sweats. But now that I’m in the thick of perimenopause I’ve noticed a lot of changes I wasn’t expecting. As one example, I’ve felt a difference in my taste buds for several months (including a strong metallic taste in my mouth which makes me feel nauseated). I was surprised to learn after a bit of googling that this may actually be related to menopause. What are some effects of menopause you’ve been surprised to discover?

I wasn’t expecting the nausea! I am going through morning sickness all over again. It’s awful, trying to eat a meal and my throat is actually closing up. No body told me about this!

    • Ellie6 years ago

Oh my day’s Sarah, didn’t know that's another symptom that was the worse thing for me during my pregnancies!! ?

    • Salesmanswidow6 years ago

Omg yes nausea is awful, no appetite, full feeling, bloating, gurgling tummy, running to loo, tight chest just horrid no interest in food at all

Bleeding. Bleeding. Bleeding. Nowhere is there anything about the days and weeks of incredible bleeding that can follow a 3 month absence of period. I am off to the hospital again on Monday but all I’m hearing is hormone imbalance.

    • Jennifer6 years ago

      Same here.

    • Anonymous6 years ago

Hi Aby, I have the same problem. Bleeding for 20 days then suddenly got really bad 250mls within 24 hours. The doctor put me on Norethisterone which stops the bleeding after 3 days. It was a 10 day course but as soon as I stopped taking them 3 days later heavy bleeding started again. I was again out on Norethisterone and told to start taking Desogestrel mini pill which seems to be keeping the bleeding under control. The bleeding has been a horrific peri menopause symptom. I didn’t realise this was a thing. I just assumed periods taker off and then stop but that’s not the case

    • Lucy6 years ago

Same! I used to be regular 28 days between periods, bleed for 6. This year so far I have had one ‘normal’ period, then 41 days with nothing, spotted for 11 days (I have never had spotting before) then bled constantly for 47 days. Stopped for 2 days then back bleeding again. I’ve just had a week of spotting and am now full on bleeding again ? Doctor has completed internals and blood tests and is putting it down to hormones. I am waiting for a scan to check for polyps or fibroids but because of corona that might not happen for a while.

    • Helenreplying to Lucy5 years ago

Hi Lucy, I’m the same age and experiencing the exact same thing. I also feel like I am constantly crampy. I had all checks down a couple of years ago and all ok. Then had 18mths if not all periods now back to nightmare all over the place. Had smear test last week so waiting for results then back to docs for another check I think. It’s all the anxiety that relates to all these symptoms and the lack of being able to talk openly about it, that makes it so much worse

    • Sherry6 years ago

Your post makes me want to cry just to see I’m not alone. I’m 49 and for the past 1/2 year or so just had light spotty periods. However, beginning in June the ongoing crime scene started. Some days heavier some days much lighter. My anxiety is off the charts...I’ve also felt so emotional and hot flashy and so scared. Dr did bloodwork and nothing looked out of whack. I have read that levels fluctuate wildly during perimenopause. I have a trans vaginal ultrasound Friday. I just want good news and to feel normal. ?

    • Samreplying to Sherry6 years ago

I know how you feel Sherry. Good luck with the ultrasound hope you find some answers

    • MelJ6 years ago

Me too! ? the overwhelming tiredness is awful too.

    • Vanessa6 years ago

Hi Aby, I had this same symptom last year. Months of bleeding with a week off before it restarted. An ultrasound of my uterus showed a thick build up, endometriosis was the diagnosis. Caused by hormonal imbalance. My gyno arranged to implant a Mirena. The bleeding has now stopped completely and the few side effects I have from the Mirena are mild compared to endless bleeding. Hopefully you find a solution!

Indigestion..... actually it’s GERD and it seems everything kicks it off

    • Virginia6 years ago

Hi, I can relate to this symptom too.

    • Anonymous6 years ago

      Severe GERD and it’s awful

    • Anonymousreplying to Anonymous6 years ago

      What is gerd ?

    • Sallyreplying to Anonymous6 years ago

      Gerd is gastroesophageal reflux disease

    • Kirsten6 years ago

Me too. I have noticed acid reflux a lot. Never had it before.

    • Anonymous6 years ago

Me too.... tried everything and nothing works

    • Anonymousreplying to Anonymous6 years ago

For gerd lifestyle change is necessary..change in foods, time you eat, and not laying flat when you sleep. Elevate your bed head or prop your upper part of body in a up position. Sleep on your left side mostly if not all the time. Don’t wear tight belt around the waist.. Also relaxation techniques also helps..hope you find relief.

    • Sally6 years ago

OMG I never knew about GERD during “the change” I have had every scan possible, every examination possible via procedures that have not been pleasant!!! Referred to a gastroenterologist who basically thinks nothing wrong with me and prescribed anti depressants!!!!! So unexplainable gastric pain for 3yrs is now explained!!! Pity my GP didn’t think this. I’m 51 and peri menopausal.

    • Anonymousreplying to Sally6 years ago

My GP has told me I’m to “young” go figure lol I’m 41 started taking periods at 10 it’s not hard to do the math.... only my niece is a nurse and a gynae nurse at that ..... the consultant she works under is a real menopause genius so thanks to him ..... anyway nothing helps and it’s not worth pumping stomach meds into me, I drink fresh ginger tea and it honestly helps

    • Vikki6 years ago

I have this too, and on so many tablets for it. My Dr hasn’t even suggested a link. What can we do about it?

    • Michelereplying to Vikki6 years ago

I ended up with the Linx. I had a hysterectomy at 40 and I’m now 52. I didn’t have my GERD symptoms until I was in my mid 40s. No one ever suggested it might be menopause. Either way, it was so bad that something needed to be done because I couldn’t function.

    • Anonymousreplying to Vikki6 years ago

Fresh ginger tea and low fat diet helps but nothing takes it away :(

    • Anonymous6 years ago

Isn’t it relief knowing your not the only one....

    • Cilb6 years ago

I have been experiencing GERD for a few months and I though it was peri menopause related. My GERD is worse before my period and sometimes leading up to ovulation day. I had an endoscopy done and it showed that I have a hiatus hernia and the GERD is causing oesophagitis and chronic gastritis. I know that some of you here had been tested and nothing was found so it most likely to be peri menoupase related but if heartburn and indigestion symptoms are persistent, do get checked out in case, like me, is something else. Though I do think peri menopause has intensified my symptoms.

    • Aliciareplying to Cilb5 years ago

I have also been diagnosed with a hiatus hernia, could I ask what you were prescribed or what your treatment plan is? My consultant was very impatient and didn’t really give me clear guidance! ?

    • Hiatal Hernia Cautionreplying to Alicia10 months ago

Keep an eye on your hiatal hernia with annual images. My mom (age 79) had a late stage hiatal hernia her doctor never notified her of even though images showed it there for a decade plus. She almost died due to the neglect of her primary… 75% of her stomach had moved up into her diaphragm and the surgeon/specialist I found for her said the next stage was it wrapping around her esophagus choking her to death. The hiatal hernia caused her to have symptoms that mimicked a heart attack, as well as aiding in severe anemia (ferritin level : 4). The surgery was rough as she’s 79 and it was a late stage hiatal, but it’s been 3 months and she’s so much better. So always take hiatal hernias seriously especially as they only get bigger over time. Surgery to repair it early on is better/easier than late stage.

    • Sara6 years ago

I’m 44. I have been suffering with a tight chest since before Christmas 2019. I was sent to the hospital as they suspected heart attack but everything was fine. The doctor said I may have pulled my chest muscles. Same happened in February 2020 - heart attack? Checked, you’re fine, must be chest muscles. Blood test in February confirmed I am peri menopausal. In May I started struggling to swallow. It felt like I had a super sour sweet stuck. Burning chest pain. Panic sets in. I managed to get into our doctors 3 weeks ago! He said it must be my thyroid (I have an under active thyroid). Asked for bloods. Thyroid slightly low so another test in 10 weeks. I realised after this that all my symptoms were GERD (had it years ago. I’m now intolerant to onion/garlic). Told the doctor over the phone and he just said “oh yes, that would explain it”. He didn’t offer me any medication or advice. So angry (which doesn’t help the symptoms). It’s nice to know it’s not just me though.

    • Anonymousreplying to Sara6 years ago

I am shocked by the dismissal of doctors to symptoms like you said of being unable to swallow and feeling of something stuck in your throat. And the fact your GP associated that to thyroid. I have been experiencing heartburn and gnawing pain in the stomach since March, GP thought it was a peptic ulcer and prescribed a course of PPI. I was told if symptoms of hard to swallow or feeling of lump in the throat start to get back to them. I would go back to you GP and ask for a referral to have an endoscopy to know for sure if your symptoms are from GERD, which seems to be, to put in your mind at rest and get better advice. I had one done and it showed I have oesophigitis and chronic gastritis caused by the acid reflux. Though I am still waiting for consultant to get back to me with a treatment plan or any advice. It’s been over 2 weeks and not a letter... frustrating. I am going to try to use some herbal help like Slip Elms tablets. Read many reviews and people with heartburn and acid reflux say it really helps. Hope it will!

    • Kristareplying to Sara5 years ago

Huh. I never knew that “stuck in throat” feeling was related! That may explain that too! Thanks ?

    • Anonymous6 years ago

I’ve had awful GORD on and off for 3 years now whilst peri & now post menopause. Tried every PPI with not much relief. Two endoscopies & colonoscopy - just showed mild oesophagitis. Had so much time off work, now on a written warning. Very stressful :(

  • Doriann6 years ago

Panic/anxiety attacks, itchiness, and increased allergies. Definitely not discussed in the menopause pamphlets!

    • Virginia6 years ago

Hi Dorian, This happened with me as well..

    • Fed up6 years ago

Omg panic attacks and anxiety. Horrendous for a while. What makes it worse is that working in an environment where most people are in their late 20’s or 30’s No one fully understands it. Ive been seen as weak and emotional and not resilient. Im learning to manage it now but it hit me hard at first and the negative responses from people do not help at a time when you are feeling anxious.

    • Hollyreplying to Fed up6 years ago

Yes!! It's so hard to get others to understand what I'm going through when they're not in the same boat

    • Mandyreplying to Sharon Stone6 years ago

I swore by CBD oil ... I took it every night before bed for 2-3 months and it deffo helped me loads..... my panic attacks had me run to hospital on 3-4 occasions as they mimicked heart attacks and I honestly couldn’t tell the difference .... dam things where destroying my life

    • Mavitareplying to Fed up6 years ago

Totally totally understand. Suffered really bad with anxiety and panic attacks in the early days. They do get easier but haven’t disappeared. I’m into my 8th year.

    • Anonymousreplying to Mavita2 years ago

      How is your anxiety now

    • Anonymous6 years ago

Yep, anxiety and insomnia for me but the anxiety has been getting worse.

    • Anonymous6 years ago

I’m 32, mine started as Pmdd. My anxiety began to be intolerable around 27 yrs old I started finding it was around certain parts of the month that’s when I learned about pmdd. I now have perimenopause as it runs early and long in them women in my family. The anxiety and panic with estrogen fluctuations is absolutely terrible. Meditation is key, and mindfulness. I can’t personally take medication because of sensitivity but I use lots of oils and herbs. Hot flashes, joint and muscle pain, migraines Uhg the woman’s body sure is complex

    • VworX5 years ago

I just turned 50 and had some panic attacks for the first time in March after a couple of nights of heart racing and high heart rate in my sleep. I thought it was all covid related. Then, it happened again last week and I couldn’t move from panic/fear for four days. My period was late and then it showed up a few days ago and like a light switch, I’m back to normal. I can only assume this is what it is. I had intense muscle and joint pain last week as well. I’ll have to figure out how to deal with them as it was pretty debilitating and terrifying. Glad to see it’s not just me because I was terrified that there is something wrong with my heart.

    • Pattyreplying to VworX5 years ago

VworX something very similar happened to me and not Only is it scaring but it’s utterly exhausting. Mine were also combined with intrusive thoughts which was the terrifying portion. I’ve learned to cope, meditation, reducing caffeine, journaling, and just general mindfulness, but it sure stinks. Never had to deal with anything of the likes before.

Electric shocks - they are insane and really painful, literally had no idea that this could be a side effect of menopause

    • Gina6 years ago

The electric shocks are a new one for me...especially in my feet/ankles and legs. Ugh!!

    • Tina F6 years ago

I get these and they freaked me out until I realized it is a menopause symptom.

    • Chasity5 years ago

Yes, I had no idea what was happening to me when i started having the electrical shocks in my legs! I also get these strange tingling sensations in my lower legs that feel as if bugs are crawling on my skin! Not only did I think I was going crazy but I’m sure others did too when they would see me swat at my legs thinking there was a fly or spider crawling on me but there was never anything there! I was SO relieved when I read this was also 1 of many strange symptoms of peri that I was having. I’m now 43, I began having symptoms when I was 39 but wasn’t aware of why until about a yr ago. My anxiety decreased tremendously after learning what was happening to me. I wish I would have learned sooner

Hi my name is Max and I have been suffering with aching joints, hands, fingers, knees, hips and sore muscles - does anyone else have this also.? I have the odd hot flushes during the night and day and wAke up now 2-3 times a night. fatigue is also quite bad, never felt so tired and it suddenly hits me and I feel useless

    • Tania6 years ago

I am so thankful you posted this as I have been really struggling with aching joints, it feels like it’s most of my body. In the morning when I try and get out of bed, my hands are really stiff and when I wake during the night it’s like they have seized up. I feel like I’m 90 when I get up , I’m 52, and I have to walk it off. My hips, knees, back, elbows and hands are dreadful. I was about to go to GP as wondered if I had something nasty. My joints have started clicking as well at times.

    • Maxreplying to Tania6 years ago

Hi Tania I have started taking Menopace and Evening Primrose supplements and I am doing exercise in the morning to get my body going. My aches (and I do mean aches and pains) are much reduced although I still get stiff & clunky fingers and joints when I wake up and during the night but nowhere near as painful. Straightening my fingers in the middle of the night has been quite bizarre and painful and something I wasn’t expecting but good to read this is a part of peri-menopause. I did start to take Black cohosh which my friend recommended and which helped her but within a couple of days taking it I started to feel quite sick so decided this wasn’t for me. Fatigue has been terrible but again with the supplements I am taking together with the exercise this seems to be getting more manageable. Oh and dry skin - more like a wrinkled prune which is tight and looks dreadful. I am now coating myself with a parafin based cream (recommended by pharmacy) which works brilliantly, no smell (apart from the parafin!) but skin looks great and feels so smooth. A little spray of your favourite perfume or body spray and you are good to go! ?

Hi, I am 47 and had an hysterectomy 2 years ago. HRT wasn’t working for me (hair loss, swelling, insomnia) so I decided to stop everything. That’s when I started having bad joint/ligament pains. I read about magnesium and omega 3/6/9 supplements and started taking them. I have to say it helped a lot. From ankles, knees and hips pains, only 1 knee seems to still be hurting on a regular basis after4 months of taking them. I had to stop running because of the pain but walking is also helping body and soul. Doctors have not helped, they are very behind in terms of hormonal imbalance and symptoms. Use internet to read about it, it will help you. The US seem much more advanced.

I have psoriatic arthritis (found out recently after having psoriasis since I was 12) and it’s really soothed by both these simple things. Also try to get lots of turmeric into your diet as it’s a natural anti inflammatory (Pukka does a great tea called Turmeric Active) Hope you find things that work soon

Yes, all of the above with the joint pain (actually just found out today since joining that my hip is a symptom). I’ve only experienced night sweats 3-4 times a night and the fatigue I chalked up to possibly period starting (since I actually never know) and being anemic. I fight to stay awake throughout the day, which I thought was being woken by either night sweats or pain from my hip or back!

I started with menopause when I was 53, I have just turned 60 and it is no better, I take Promensil (red clover) to help with the symptoms, I am not sure if it works or not, as I daren’t stop taking it as I don’t know how I would cope if it got worse, I can’t have HRT as I suffer with Hemiplegic Migraines, everyone I know who has HRT swears by it.

I feel your pain - literally. My ankles and Achilles’ tendon get so sore. Like you I take long walks and it’s been upsetting having to deal with ankle pain. I can’t wear my hiking boots at the moment and am experimenting with different shoes to see if that helps. I use Voltarol gel as well. The thing that’s saving my sanity is Pilates which I started doing 4 months ago. Great for the body and mind x

    • Caroline6 years ago

Yep! Wore shoes a size and a half too big today and they were still tight at midday!! Often struggle to walk and I usually walk 5 miles a day ?

  • Victoria G6 years ago

Hi, I’ve been having vivid and frequent dreams dreams every night - about very boring and mundane stuff! I don’t normally remember dreaming. Also I often get a sensation like I’ve burnt my tongue on hot food, which affects the taste of food.

    • Claire6 years ago

I have the burnt tongue !!! Nothing takes remotely exciting any more so I don’t really bother eating that much - I’ve been dreaming strange things too - I did put them down to lockdown but they are bizarre !!!

    • Janreplying to Claire6 years ago

I’ve had burning tongue for 6 months it’s horrible like I have scalded my tongue and is more intense after eating. I have to eat regularly as also have Gerd so feel I’m in a catch 22 situation. It’s really is debilitating. The doctors say I may have it for life or it may just go on it’s own?has anyone else suffered with this. Apparently it is more common in women around the menopause. What are your experiences or remedies I would really love to hear from you?

    • Anonymousreplying to Jan5 years ago

I have read that burning mouth is down to low estrogen. Might be worth looking into?

    • Brigitte5 years ago

Yes. I’ve had some dreams about mundane stuff and in the dream I’m obsessed with whatever it is and my sleep becomes restless. I have to wake myself up and tell myself whatever I was working on in my dream isn’t real and doesn’t matter. It feels like the type of dream I’ve had when I’m feverish.

  • Poppyred6 years ago

I’m in Peri stage and getting hormonal migraines, tiredness and anxiety. My anxiety causes my skin to feel like it’s burning.

    • Anonymous6 years ago

I had that. Started out with tingling and then burning, like a sunburn. Then I had a panic attack with trembling. I don't know if it's menopause or the worry of the pandemic.

  • CDS6 years ago

Anxiety and the knock on impact to my self confidence and mental health. Joint pain, I often wake in the night with pain in my hands and frequently feel like I’m living in an 80 year olds body rather than my 47 year old one. The impact on my life has been huge, I don’t feel at all like myself and it is so difficult to explain to others without sounding really pathetic and self obsessed. I didn’t know to expect any of this, the focus always seems to be on hot flushes.

    • Catlyn6 years ago

The anxiety is disturbing. I really struggle with this and the feeling that no one really understands how horrible this can be

    • Anonymousreplying to Catlyn5 years ago

Same for me. My co-workers and husband has been supportive but I fear it’s getting to sound like a drag. I keep it to myself mostly these days but the anxiety I had no notion to expect! Some days are worse than others. I’m getting the rhythm down somewhat with my cycles and fluctuating hormones. I now also have a racing heart that sometimes feels as if it will jump out of my chest. It’s frightening. Glad we all have each other and not feel so alone. I also get it itchy and occasionally the feeling of lump in the throat. I think that’s my anxiety.

    • Pattyreplying to Catlyn5 years ago

I feel this through and through. Anxiety that is pervasive and can run away from me. I miss living without it.

    • Anonymousreplying to Catlyn2 years ago

  • Bertie6 years ago

Painful legs that just walking is painful and pins and needles!

  • Michelle6 years ago

Have any of you thought about going on HRT?

    • Catlyn6 years ago

I am on HRt and where it certainly helps with some symptoms (hot flushes, sleeplessness, fatigue etc) it has brought on a huge amount of other problems. However it has certainly made my life a lot better and I have gone from 16 hot flushes a day to maybe 1 or 2 if any

    • Simireplying to Catlyn6 years ago

Hi Catlyn, thank you for sharing your experience and great that you've found relief from hot flushes. I deal with many every day too and am considering my options. I'm curious what the other issues are that you mentioned you've experienced from HRT? Many thanks for sharing

    • Catlynreplying to Simi6 years ago

I still have leg pains and an increase in muscle tension since hrt. Electric shocks and back pain have started since hrt. The worst thing is the anxiety increase I saw with HRT, however this has calmed down as much as it can during the current crisis. I certainly sleep better now, At least 6 hours continuous sleep a night which is amazing.

    • Simireplying to Catlyn6 years ago

Oh my, sorry to hear you've had these side effects, I wasn't aware that could be a result of HRT. This gives me good info to discuss with my doc so thank you for sharing!

Hello all I have experienced a metal taste in my mouth for quite sometime, I didn’t Realise it was connected to the menopause. Does anyone have any ideas how to help get rid of the taste?

    • Anonymous6 years ago

Me too, and a metallic smell

    • Anonymous4 years ago

Same!! And then my anxiety made it even worse. So happy for this site!!! You’re not alone.

  • Rachel6 years ago

Last year I started with the throat thing and finally got told it’s gerd! The last few months tho have been text book menopause craziness. It’s like someone came along and threw every symptom going at me. A full two weeks of night sweats with hot flushes thrown in! Up and down emotions worse than puberty! Then joint pain in my fingers, jaw, ankles. Thank goodness for ladies like you all for discussing matters which are dusted under the carpet. Let’s keep going and making sure menopause becomes part of life not ridicule.

    • Sara6 years ago

I am just the same. All the GERD pain also brings on panic attacks (and being a normally strong person who takes care of everyone else) it frightens my family to see me shaking and in tears. We can get through this together xx

    • Patty5 years ago

What did the throat thing feel like for you?

  • Kate6 years ago

Has anyone else felt as if there’s an earthquake erupting in their stomach, just when they’re trying to get to sleep at night? There’s no pain related to it and it’s not GORD, as I have had that since c2000 and take daily meds for it. It is the weirdest sensation, deeply unsettling though it doesn’t seem to cause any damage. It’s as if your inner stomach is vibrating.

    • Mia6 years ago

Hi Kate, I've had digestion problems for sure but I'm not sure if it's the same as what you're explaining. Do you get the vibrating sensation quite often, or in particular after eating certain foods?

    • Victoria5 years ago

Yes I know exactly what you mean. Just as I’m dozing off my stomach kind of churns and it wakes me back up. It’s a very odd feeling and hard to describe

  • Tammy6 years ago

I’m 49, and for some reason I completely forgot about menapause. I’m peri menapause at the moment. It came out of nowhere. The weight gain in my stomach, the stiff joints, like I’m 90 years old. I have just about all symptoms except for hot flashes, which I’m grateful. I feel like I’m a completely different person. No one understands. I no longer talk about it to anyone, because I sound like a broken record. I’m sooo grateful for this app.

    • Kristin5 years ago

Hi Tammy, I turn 50 next month and honestly thought I was dying. I’ve been hiding my symptoms and not letting anyone know what’s going on with me because I feel crazy. Found this app and it’s all so clear now-it never occurred to me I was in perimenopause. Reading your post made me cry, I’m not alone! My symptoms (horrible insomnia, extreme fatigue, tingling hands and fingers, neck, back and knee pain, headaches, blurry vision, random left boob pain, just to name a few) literally came out of nowhere and I’ve felt just so pathetic! We don’t have health insurance so not sure how I’m ever going to be able to go to the doctor for blood work and HRT- which sounds like it could possibly be life changing. So thankful to have found this app and know I’m not just making all this weird stuff up that is happening to my body!

    • Deb J5 years ago

I hear you Tammy, it’s scary, because I feel like I’m losing it at times. The fatigue is horrendous, I don’t know how I’m going to go back to my job once they have us back in the office, because working from home now I can get naps and still get my work done. I feel like I need to talk about it more, because instead of recognizing the brain fog for what it is, I’ve been really tough on myself. Heading to Gyno next week....

Yes to rosacea - apparently quite common during peri & menopause- great! I’ve got the spotty ness under control but the redness and flushing is so annoying! ☹️

  • A. O’Brien6 years ago

I felt so ignorant when I finally learned the crazy ache in my joints and sheer and utter exhaustion for now reason’ was perimenopause (I’m 45) - but also felt somewhat relieved to understand why. I’m already in testosterone (for me, this has been life changing for the better, I know it’s not for everyone but such huge relief in several other symptoms) and take thyroid meds everyday- so I’m struggling that I feel I don’t know what to expect, how long it will last, is it going to impact my ability to do my job? The fear of my own body isn’t what I expected. The complexity of it all, not expected. I’m thankful to have found this app and the read all you women facing the same crap.

    • Penny6 years ago

I totally relate to this as I ask the same questions. How long will it last, what will my body throw at me next? Like you, the only reassurance I feel is hearing (or reading) other women's stories here. Good luck to us all

Feel that it’s impossible to loose weight. Tried every diet.

    • Caro6 years ago

Try the Joe Wicks 90 day plan. I was 72kg at beginning of lockdown and worried that my weight would steadily increase. But since starting the 90 day ‘lifestyle change’ I have become stronger and leaner - I am only half way through and weighed in at 66kg this morning ? Doing strength exercises is very important as we lose Oestrogen so I will be sticking with this plan now.

Large, heavy painful boobs are the worst symptom and general all over fluid retention! Lasts for weeks too. Like a PMS symptom but then no period??!! I’d rather have more hot flushes than the sore boobs and being full of water all the time. Would HRT help this symptom or just make it worse like the pill??!! My GP said that would be the case. Had this back in August which then led to a full on period of bleeding of biblical proportions. Fluid is back but no period since then. Awful!

  • Neidei6 years ago

This app is SO reassuring! So glad I downloaded it. I’m 46 and Have a Merina coil so I’m finding tracking my cycle & symptoms a bit tricky. My periods have jumped to 2 a month every alternate month - having always been v regular. Lots of hot flushes - manageable but noticeable, finding it very hard to sleep at night - my mind racing, and waves of exhaustion - and a LOW mood hitting me every couple of weeks lasting for a week or so. Also my hairline is definitely receding at my temples! Maybe it sounds silly but I thought At 46 I was too young to be peri - thought it’d be a year or two before I’d feel any symptoms but I realise now - and am relieved Tbh to know - that it’s probably all premenopausal.

    • JemmaA6 years ago

I feel your pain! I’m 45 and definitely feeling peri menopausal. My periods come every 19-21 days (I was always 31 days before), although luckily they’re quite short and light). I feel major brain fog and low mood in the few days beforehand. Achy ribs and joints. My weight is hard to manage - I never used to gain weight around my middle. Lockdown doesn’t help - I have 4 kids (4yo-almost 15), so there is always treats around that I can’t resist!! Last year I had major health anxiety (probably triggered by my dad dying and my mum’s dementia and caring for them), which I think wasn’t helped by my hormones. I had tingling arms and legs, twitching muscles and panic attacks. My dr said it was all anxiety and thankfully it has mostly stopped. I had rib pain and was referred for all kinds of scans and tests. I was convinced it must be cancer! I’ve realised now it was anxiety and probably hormones too, as it only happens when I’m premenstral - indigestion makes my ribs ache!! I’m a Christian, so my faith and church family got me through that hard time. Sorry for the long message. It feels good to write it down somewhere that folks might identify!! Hang in there ladies!

    • KC6 years ago

Hi, I’m 46 and also have a Merina Coil. For the past 6 months I’ve had terrible night sweats, extreme fatigue and hot flushes. As I don’t have periods (due to the coil) I had a blood test two weeks ago to check my hormone levels. My Dr confirmed that I’ve started the Peri Menopause and she prescribed me HRT (in patch form). She told me that it would take 3 weeks to notice my symptoms begin to subside, however, within 24 hours my fatigue had gone. I’m still tired but prior to the patch I was sleeping all day at the weekend, which was making me feel so guilty as my hubby has been doing everything (thank good he’s so understanding). I’m still having night sweats and hot flushes but I feel so much better and now I’m awake on Sat & Sun! I was nervous about trying HRT and I’ve only been on it for 8 days, but I can honestly say it’s given me my life back as I can get out of bed and go to work without feeling completely exhausted ?

    • Clare6 years ago

Same here with merina coil but no periods at all for years. I am 47 Night sweats, anxiety, back pain and fatigue. I am also really clumsy and my spatial awareness is rubbish! Do lots of exercise as it’s my therapy but feel very stiff and sore all the time. Pilates is great . This app is great too, we are in this together x

    • Anonymous6 years ago

I did but my mom suggested using an eye mask with beads that I heat up in the microwave for 40 seconds twice a day (bought on Amazon). Clogged oil ducts, not tear ducts seem to be the problem in meno. Huge improvement!

I’ve had all these symptoms through lockdown and was terrified that something serious was wrong. I have muscular pains, GERD, the metallic taste in my mouth and anxiety. Yes, definitely. I haven’t had periods for a while but for a few days before it was due my eyesight would rapidly deteriorate and go blurry. Now I rarely have periods but the days before the cycle should come, it still deteriorates and goes blurry along with really bad brain fog, anxiety, sweats day and night mood swings and absolute exasperation with everything. I also get clumsy.

  • JulesM6 years ago

I’m so relieved to read some of these comments. I’m 53 but feel 83. I don’t have hot flushes but do get the very occasional night sweat. The worst thing is lack of sleep and the accompanying fatigue. Also brain fog, I’ve been so worried about my memory. My knees and back ache in the mornings, I hobble down the stairs like an old woman. Is this really all down to the menopause?

  • MP6 years ago

These comments have been so helpful. Knowing that I’m not alone with the aching joints, stiff hands, brain fog, fatigue....I could go on. But the other thing I’ve noticed is hair shooting out of my body! Overnight! Particularly my neck. I’ll check every night and tweezer them out. The next day there’ll be another one about an inch long. Overnight! How is this possible! I try to laugh about it and my dear friend has encouraged me to view them as ‘stray eyebrows’ lol but the excessive body hair can impact my confidence. I’ve always been hairy but the sudden growth is getting a bit ridiculous!

It was the feeling sick that knocked me for six. Went to my doctors and was told it is not a menopause symptom. After pregnancy test I was given anti sickness drugs which managed to stop it for a little while. Still get it on and off. Peppermint tea is my best cure for this. I also got the aching joints inc fingers and clicking knees. I did an awful lot of research and started taking 2 very high quality fish oil tablets. That seems to have done the trick. I even joined up to do figure 8 dance exercises every day.

There are a lot of phone apps which can help by playing a similar tone and confusing it. Failing that, there are various physical options, or a even hearing aids. I’ve had tinnitus all my life, and just gave in to hearing aids a few years ago. They really did help.

  • Julia (RN, BSN) - Caria Coach6 years ago

Hi Sarah, you're right - burning tongue (or burning mouth syndrome) is a surprising yet common symptom of perimenopause. It seems like such a bizarre symptom! But your oral mucosa (the membrane lining your mouth) strongly depends on hormonal balance. So when your hormones are all over the place, like they are in perimenopause, your mouth can undergo a lot of unexpected changes. Studies find that women in perimenopause experience a decrease in saliva, an increase in gum and oral yeast infections, changes in taste (including that metallic taste you are experiencing), and yes, burning pain. Treatment of burning mouth can vary but it is best to meet with both your doctor and dentist to help you come up with a plan to relieve your symptoms and feel less anxious about this odd symptom. Other less known symptoms of menopause can be unexplained dizziness, hair loss, stress incontinence, digestive issues, allergies, tingling extremities, and changes in body odor.

I came off of combi hrt patch/tablets in Jan as here in Uk there were terrible supply issues and I was frustrated not Being able to have one type for more than a month or so before the stock ran out and I had to try something else. The alternatives just made ne feel like poo so I decided to come off and cope. Brain fog has increased in the last few months - I am nicknamed Dory at work as I would forget my head if not screwed on. I get rather emotional too - if I feel an attack of the wobbles coming on I find a bolt hole and get it out of my system. My boss is the stiff upper lip kind - she really doesn’t do hormones. One thing that I’ve struggled with for last few months is tremendous heel pain. My foot arch can be unbearable at times. Never had a problem before.

  • Angie6 years ago

I’ve a lot of the most common symptoms but I also get a tender to touch sensation on my thighs. Feels like sunburn and can’t bare touch or clothes.

  • Suzanne6 years ago

I’ve noticed a tightening in my chest (had it thoroughly checked, not heart related) that sometimes precedes a hot flash. Almost like a milk let down response similar to when breastfeeding - but no discharge. My gyn says it’s a lesser known symptom of menopause. I’m actually post menopause and this symptom started about a year ago. Super surprised to feel that again!

  • Sarah6 years ago

Spotting all the time. Actually it starts at ovulation and lasts on and off until period starts. After period, nothing until ovulation again. I do have fibroids and a polyp though and I think that can cause the spotting also.

  • Sharon6 years ago

    Symmetrical joint pain

  • Suzanne6 years ago

My latest symptom is vulval itching. It began with a bout of thrush in January following antibiotics and never went away. I have had all sorts of tests, diabetes, several swabs etc but all clear. Apparently it can be caused by menopause and I now am the proud owner of steroid cream for down there!! I can’t use it more than seven days though so also have Vagisil which actually does the job better by numbing slightly. It’s unbelievably frustrating, painful, sharp and burning hot. But the doc did say it will go when my body adjusts - but that will be a while.... Anyone else suffering with this?

Terrible IBS, but I’ve found a vegan ketogenic diet helps. The other things when I was peri menopausal was I smelt like butter. I know, very odd but there it is!

Oh my gosh. I’m so glad I thought of looking for an app yesterday! I’ve been struggling for the past two years without realizing, until This year that it’s probably perimenopause. ? It is a slight relief to know there’s reasons for what my body is doing. It’s extremely difficult to manage day-to-day, heck, hour-to-hour! Mood changes!! Body pain (and I’m a body builder so this is brutal!) Brain fogs. Man... so glad everyone is open about their experiences ??

  • Kat6 years ago

Dizziness, anyone? I feel like I’ve run the gambit of common perimenopausal symptoms and now I’m having on and off again slight dizziness not seemingly related to anything else.

    • Patty5 years ago

I feel I was battling dizziness consistently within a few hours of waking in the morning. It was that way for months, before I even figured I was in perimenopause. Now I look back and realize that’s what was going on. The feeling was near unbearable, and I am a nurse and it would happen at a time of morning when I was always really busy at work and needing to stay focused. At the time I was on birth control and I have sent stopped it and my symptoms have dramatically improved.

    • Kat5 years ago

Yes, I’ve been getting dizziness on and off too

Hi. My name is Fiona and I’m 52. I’ve been having tingling sensations in my hands and arms for a few months now. Does anyone else get this?

  • R’gal6 years ago

For me it’s the extreme emotional responses. Crying at the drop of a hat and the anger too. I feel like a child having tantrums. Everything feels amped up. It’s knocked my confidence quite a bit because I can not control them. Then there’s the insomnia. Wide awake until 4am. I am constantly sleep deprived. And let’s not forget the aching/clicking joints. And last but not least the sensitive skin. When I wear makeup despite moisturising I feel I want to claw at my face. I bought Menopace and Evening Primrose but clearly I have not given it a chance. Silly me for expecting an instant result. Thank you everyone for all the comments. Maybe I am not going crazy or developing some personality disorder like my daughter seems to think. I have been driving her barkers in the process too.

Hi - did anyone notice their BP increased. It seems coincidental that as soon as I started to notice I was going through peri-menopause that my BP spiked - never suffered before and am healthy weight and diet and then out of nowhere it started to go mad. The Dr and Consultant can’t work out why and said it can just happen (idiopathic) and they may never know why. I truly believe it is linked to menopause

  • Fiona5 years ago

I have a weird sensation like a juddering in my vagina when I’ve been laying in bed for a while. It keeps me awake at night. Dues anyone have the same?

  • Caroline Too5 years ago

I have some of the usual symptoms, but the most surprising one to me personally was the tummy troubles. I’ve always been the Queen of Spice. No longer. ?. I’m learning to tone down my cooking and am diluting regular coffee with chicory. Also taking a probiotic regularly now, which seems to help. I miss my old self but it’s key I keep pivoting and adjusting as necessary! What a wild ride!

I have put away the sriracha sauce too; I hear you, Caroline Too! And I was born on a tropical island and have been accustomed to spicy food all my life, ao no one is more surprised about this than I am! Thanks for posting; it really helps to know that I am not alone and that there’s a Spice Queen out there who’s rolling with the punches. All the best to you!

I have been having excruciating lower back pain in SI/piriformis area. My doc has sent me for X-rays, but because this pain is randomly almost debilitating & some days not, I think it is likely related to the PM which has come full on this summer. I tried Robax muscle relaxant the last couple of nights & have almost no pain in the morning. The wicked irritability & boiling anger that also bubbles up sometimes are a shocker too. Someone else coined the phrase “groins whiffage” and I find those days most embarrassing ?. This whole deal sucks ??

Does anyone suffer from upset stomach, less tolerant to foods I used to eat and more loose stools - sorry to ask but I have noticed so many changes I have lost count and forgotten what I used to feel like

    • Jem5 years ago

I’ve been suffering from upper abdominal pain under my ribs. Had all sorts of investigations, but nothing to see. Thankfully it’s eased now, but now have constipation and floating poop!! Again tests didn’t find any reason for the floating, so I’m assuming it’s another peri menopause thing. I’m almost 47.

    • Angela3 years ago

Yes, Max! I’ve also had this problem and I was frustrated/anxious about it. It seemed like a one-off at first, and then it happened more and more often. The root cause still mystifies me (changing hormones & effect on gut? stress? food intolerance?) but I have eliminated my major culprits (alcohol, greasy/fried foods, and a few raw fruits) and have an appointment with an allergist for a skin exposure test. What have you done thus far? I hope this helps you to know you are not alone!

    • Angela3 years ago

Yes, I have noticed this too! Scientifically speaking, it is normal. Our hormones and our digestive processes are linked. (However, I am not an MD, so please take that with a grain of salt.) Have you been able to figure out any major suspects? After a LOT of trial and error (and so much frustration / mild anxiety) I now avoid what appear to be my personal bugaboos (junk/greasy food, sugary/fizzy drinks, raw apples, pears). I’m getting an allergy exposure test in a few weeks and hope to have some definitive answers soon! Good luck to you; you are not alone and I hope that knowing that helps you a bit.

I have so may issues/ totally out of control/ anxiety/ panic attacks/ hot flashes/ chills/ joint and muscle pain/ alopecia/ weight gain/ palpitations/ i have never been so miserable in my life

  • Bunty5 years ago

Hello. So glad that I am not alone. I would consider my symptoms fairly mild.. yes I have a night sweat now and again and the occasional flush...but it’s all the other things that are starting to add up. Aches and pains out of nowhere...knees, thighs, back, fingers! And the disrupted sleep...and the fatigue which at times is crushing. And have also started to experience mild vertigo. And all of this creates anxiety that there is something more serious going on. This last week it has gone through my mind that I have cancer or early onset dementia. I feel so stupid about it. I’m 52 and in many ways feel more confident about myself but at other times I feel anxious. I am not taking any medication for menopause, as I, rightly or wrongly don’t like taking tablets and with the whole COVID issue I don’t feel as if I should bother the doctor.

  • Hol5 years ago

I’ve been getting a low grade fever, headaches, muscle pain, extreme fatigue every month on day 20 up until my period. It started just after I had a virus in March / April last year (maybe covid, don’t know) and now I get it every month. I have been tested for everything and doctor said post-viral syndrome but I looked back at my tracker and realise it’s always the same time in my cycle.

  • Sparkle5 years ago

I have been reviewing my symptoms over the years as I am in menopause. Started with dry eyes and told I had blepharitis. Then started having panic attacks (thought I was having a heart attack but not .. phew) had a few Ecg readings and all showing normal. I get heart palpitations too and have high blood pressure. Although not bad enough for drugs, it runs in family but most manage without need for drugs. Then had odd bouts of dizziness, would wake in morning unable to get up due to dizziness. Would take ages to get my balance and be able to function. It would last a few days then go. Then started having the odd night sweat. Then bad anxiety and lack of confidence which gets really bad at times resulting in me having shaking episodes. Then brain fog, still have times where I cannot find the words and have problems speaking, wrong words come out or cannot find word. I get so forgetful and seem like someone with dementia. I have stopped taking my mini pill as it masks my periods & tracking if my periods have stopped naturally now. I haven’t had a period for 6 months so Just waiting for the 12 months marker. I am 52. I think I am menopausal now given the way my body feels. Now getting poor sleep, insomnia cannot sleep some nights which makes me tired during day and fatigued. Symptoms seem to come and go in waves. Now getting skin crawling, which is a horrid feeling. Feels like water dribbling down under my skin and inside my body. Get it mainly on my lower back and sides. Some times on my upper legs. I didn’t think any of these were related to menopause until I started reading up on the subject. Now can see that they are all related. Covid is not helping matters as it increases my anxiety levels and stress. With some symptoms matching it is hard to tell if it is menopause or Covid some times. Now putting on weight around my belly, didn’t have this before and getting bad digestive problems which fit IBS symptoms. Could be due to pandemic anxiety but could be menopause too. So now looking at ways to lose weight and reduce symptoms. Glad I have found this app as I don’t feel alone with symptoms as GPs are not helpful so far.

  • Anonymous5 years ago

I can relate to most of these symptoms! Brain fog is awful! Migraines occur every week and low moods throughout.Walking and light exercise help with lots of rest. Every day brings a different experience! Bladder prolapse doesn’t help either. We have to just take each day as it comes.

    • KN2 years ago

I’m in perimenopause and I get the swollen, hot, tingly, etc hands (occasionally feet), running legs, tingling arms, etc. and best thing for most body symptoms like this is a massage. I normally don’t like massages and my husband is an LMT, but I go begging him and it helps a lot when I get feeling really bad. Tingling and swelling is usually associated with lack of circulation and blood flow, so maybe adjust sleeping position too. Make sure nothing is getting pinched off at night.?

  • Anonymous5 years ago

Does anyone suffer with a shortness of breath when they get hot flushes?

  • Anonymous5 years ago

Where to start....lol....I knew about hot flashes, mood swings and night sweats, but I was unaware of every other possible symptom, such as cold flashes, unbearable itchiness, joint pain, increased sense of smell, ongoing headaches, constipation, heart palpitations, insomnia, etc. I experience all of this and more. Ugh.

I have loss of pigment on my face. My face is very patchy. Had it for 2 yrs and I am 50 now. Has anyone else experienced this? Not even sure if it is related to menopause but wondered if it could be hormonal a bit like “pregnancy mask” that some women experience.

  • Tina5 years ago

I’m 3 years in and only just discovered this app. I’m so glad I did, it’s like reading about my own life these last few years. I expected the “normal” stuff - the hot flushes, the tears, the mood swings. I wasn’t expecting the endless and constantly growing list. Joint aches, IBS, bladder problems, memory lapses, anxiety, belly weight gain, nausea like morning sickness, reflux/heartburn, extreme bloating (I can look 8 months pregnant at times), exhaustion (feels like I’ve been drugged) and restless legs. I read once that menopause isn’t something you go through, it’s a condition you live with indefinitely. Fun.

  • Moira5 years ago

I have experienced an unexplained intermittent bad taste in my mouth. I don't know if this is related, but it seems like every odd thing is a possible side effect. I have also had the sensation that I had bugs on my skin. Thankfully that was short lived!

  • Kazza5 years ago

I have had a lot of symptoms since around 46 - muscle twitches, sore legs, joint pain, nose bleeding when blow, as well as standard hot flushes. They seem to go on a few weeks, disappear then something new starts. Latest is anxiety. Was all day with overwhelming nervous feeling. Has got better after 8 weeks of HRT, but still quite bad in morning. Also get shaky hands especially when typing and general feeling of shakiness. Sometimes see hands shaking a bit, sometimes just feel on inside. Guess probably related to the anxiety. Has anyone else had this?

    • Joci1 year ago

I have had most of this too! The muscle twitches cause me so much anxiety!! I have noticed the shakiness at times, I do think that is related to anxiety.

I was surprised to see my gums receding, the appalling body odor, hair loss not just on my head, but I lost my eyebrows and lashes! I have to pluck them now because if I get them waxed, I lose too much of my eyebrows. The hair is almost finer. People say “grow old gracefully". That last thing I feel like is graceful! Every day I look in the mirror and find some new lovely thing like hair growing all over my face. This sucks big time ladies. Don’t let anyone tell you different! ☹️

So pleased I downloaded this App! Went straight into menopause after full hysterectomy in 2016 and experiencing many of the symptoms discussed! I only knew of hot flushes! The weight gain and bloating seem to have happened overnight! Also the nausea, itchy skin, change in taste etc. I had no idea!

  • Cath5 years ago

I had no idea that perimenopause would trash my depression. I was doing fine and then as my periods became wildly irregular just after I turned 50, I was thrown into a major depression.

Every. One. Of. These. Symptoms. I own. Thank God I read through these cuz I really figured I was dying. Left thigh muscle hurts? From what? No idea. Heart burn. Boobs…. Ugh. Pain, itchy, burning. Even had a huge cyst at one point that scared the hell out of me. Acne. My teeth seem to chip easily?? Is that a peri menopause thing? Fatty tissue bumps. Another weird thing. ?‍♀️ Now, the newest.. very dark spotting after my period only when wiping. Oh.. and the uterus flutter. Really trying to think of something positive here but I’m coming up empty.

I didn’t expect anxiety and panic attacks. I was thinking hot flashes and crying a lot like my sister or being cranky like my mom was when she went through the change. I have occasional night sweats but they’re not really bothersome. The anxiety, the back pain, muscle tension, tiredness, etc? No. I have been crying a lot the past two days. My period ended yesterday or day before. I didn’t expect my GP to be so clueless about checking hormone levels. He said it was tricky. He’s a man, what did I expect? I need to find a female gynecologist, preferably an older woman. She would understand.

I’m so happy I found this app. It’s so reassuring to realize others have the same symptoms, especially when doctors don’t seem to really understand that hats going on. Is anyone else suffering from nausea? Mine comes and goes and feels very like morning sickness.

    • Anonymous2 years ago

Yes! How have you got on since your post?

  • Cara4 years ago

I have all the symptoms mentioned, I’m a nurse working predominantly covid and had out alot of it down to my job. However, at 47 I decided it was best to seek medical advice. They didn’t even do hormone check as I tick all the boxes and they started me straight on patches which have made little difference. Unfortunately, dueinf a CT scan for something unrelated they’ve uncovered masses internally both left side and right and I have an mri booked for 13/1 to confirm if these are attached to my ovaries or my fallopians tubes. I had ovaries clipped 3yrs ago alongside a cervical ablation for severe period bleeding. They also found a nodule on my adrenal gland. Apparently all these things can cause similar symptoms to menopause so currently I have no idea what is going on! Am totally emotionally wrecked xx

I had a brain MRI and CT last year for something unrelated and they were clear.

  • Krista3 years ago

Oh boy. I’ve had obvious peri menopause symptoms for 2-1/2 years now, but I think I’ve been having more minor symptoms for about 6 years (I’m 52 now). I Didn’t realize at first what was going on until my doctor mentioned it. Started having extreme heavy periods every other week for about 8 months. Then random periods. Then found I had fibroids which was contributing. Then I started having trouble sleeping & random night sweats. Then random hot flashes. Then I couldn’t concentrate for more than a 1/2 hr which interferes with my job badly. Extreme mood swings, anxiety like I’ve never experienced & inability to remember either what I went into a room for or words or forgot mid sentence what I was talking about!!! I finally talked with my naturopath & suspecting I also have undiagnosed ADHD (cuz that wasn’t even a thing when I was a kid), she suggested Wellbutrin. It has helped enormously with my focus & not feeling on the edge of a breakdown every day. I also take Curcumin which has reduced the aches in my hands & elbows & back. I also take wither Estrovera or MenoSmart which seems to help with volcanic night sweats. The other thing I think is recently happening is crazy itchiness! My chest was itchy last night & I’ve got welts. My usual soap & laundry detergent seem to be causing itchiness too. ?. Sheesh. I tell you what tho, finding this app was a life saver. I thought I was off my nut for awhile!!

I’ve had tinnitus, anxiety and panic attacks from Hell. My boobs hurt two weeks before my period starts. Now I get pulsative tinnitus a few days into my period. It doesn’t usually last all day and goes away after a few days. The tinnitus and panic attacks have been the most bothersome.

I have experienced terrible jaw and neck pain, along with unusual sensations in my mouth and on my tongue. Not quite the burning mouth syndrome some of you talk of, but irritated tongue and roof of mouth. It’s refreshing to read everyone’s comments and know we are not alone in this. Would be interested to hear if anyone else has experienced any TMJ related pain.

I’ve been surprised at how HIGH my libido’s gotten. I expected the exact opposite, but instead I can’t leave my husband alone. I’m constantly in the mood, and at our age, he can only satisfy me once per day. I could honestly go more than that! It’s a nice change, because until recently, I didn’t want sex at all. I think I’ll enjoy it while it lasts!

Swollen, itchy boobs! Rash all over, tingly skin and hands, headache, insomnia.. these symptoms are new! I’m 54 and the past five years i’ve just had mild hot flashes and night sweats.

  • KN2 years ago

I tried to find this one in the comments, but didn’t see it… Has anyone had the way you sweat or where you normally sweat from change? I know about the obvious hot flash and night sweat, but I started sweating differently too just in normal day to day living. My family jokes and calls it “Mt. Rainier” because we backpacked Mt Rainier one year and I drenched my shirt down to my stomach. It was due to elevation difference, not because I literally looked rained on haha, and I was not in perimenopause at the time. I never used to sweat like that (like down into my shirt). Now just regular work around the house (not hot flashing or anything like that) has me looking like I just showered with my clothes on. “Mt. Rainier sweaty mom” It gets embarrassing because I can’t control it. I’m almost 48, now in perimenopause and have an IUD. Other, not mentioned often, symptoms I have is boogery white discharge sometimes (no odor). I also have more sharp pain or cramps in one or the other ovary (my tests were normal too), I’m assuming when I’m menstruating (no blood flow because of IUD so I have to guess). Anyone else have any of these?

  • Jen2 years ago

So glad to see we are not alone! I’m curious. I’m 48 and have fairly regular cycles but yet each month is a different perimenopause symptom. This past month I started to have soreness every time I passed stool and now it burns when I sit and even irritated in perineal area. I do have a history of hemorrhoids after my kids but they usually go away within a few days or a week. This burning is still on going and pain when I use the bathroom. Anyone else have this or can suggest what I can do?

  • Stephanie2 years ago

ITCHING! First day with this app and I feel like I’m not crazy after all. Mentioned the itchy lower legs to my doctor a couple of times over the last year and only got a surprised look. I’m 53 and peri-menopausal and I’ve had itchy lower legs (and sometimes feet) on and off for almost a year. Lotions or allergy meds don’t really help. Just drives me crazy for a few hours and then goes away on its own. Occasionally - I get the same itchiness all over my body - neck, boobs, arms, hands. Again , goes away in a couple of hours. Last night and today it’s only my left nipple driving me insane. This is why I looked for answers online - and found all of you!

Hi I’m new here my name is Kelly. I’m a month in to the menopause. In the last two year’s I have dropped a dress size from 22 to a size 10 but not on purpose and I hate being a size 10. Had many tests and they all come back normal. It is rare but my dr is wondering if it’s the perimenopause/menopause? I must sound crazy but I really hope I put on weight now I’m in the menopause.

I’m 53 and a surprising symptom that I’ve been experiencing since last August (it is now mid-April) is that my skin feels sunburned all over. I put moisturizer on twice per day (so I don’t think that it’s dry skin per se). Clothing seams irritate me. There’s no rash. I started hrt at the end of January this year. I think it has helped a little. My skin is rarely comfortable, only tolerable. I’m tired of not being comfortable in my own skin!
