Help with thinning hair

Since entering peri-menopause my hair has started to thin quite a lot and is becoming noticeable. It might sound vain, but this is getting me down more than the other symptoms. Have others experienced this issue and have you found any products/remedies to be helpful?

I tried a serum from Ekó botanicals called Amanirenas. My hair is so much stronger, softer and shinier. Highly recommend

I am in exactly the same position and even though I take care to brush my hair etc it still keeps falling out. I would also be interested to hear if anyone has any suggestions

I am a master aesthetician. I highly recommend a LED panel by Celluma. I personally own 5 LED devices. I use daily for cellular re-evaluation and for pain management from arthritis oh and collagen synthesis

I have had exactly the same thing since being put into menopause at the age of 29! I’m not ready to lose my hair yet ? I was extremely conscious of the sides of my head getting noticeably thinner to the point it looked like bald patches when I tied it up. I got in touch with Philip Kingsley and spoke to a Trichologist, they’ve explained the connection between oestrogen and hair growth to me and given I can’t have HRT have prescribed me with topical hormones for my scalp and I’ve been using their shampoo, conditioner and elasticizer to maintain the hair I still have and thicken it. Its only been a few weeks and I’ve already noticed the difference, my husband without prompting even acknowledged how thick my hair looked a few days ago so I know it’s not just in my head. I’m not sure if they have it in America but you can get most of their stuff online and they have some interesting articles on their website too. Hope that’s of some use to you as I know personally how tough it can be x

I lost more than half the volume of my hair and I had a lot! Take biotin. I’m post menopausal now and wish I knew about it sooner.

Not vain at all. Am post menopausal and lost so much hair even my husband commented. So I started using Regaine every night and 4 months down the line I am seeing significant improvement. Husband says it looks better. The trouble is that you have to continue using Regaine long term

I’m in the same boat and suffering in silence. My hair has reduced in size by half in the past 4 years and I didn’t notice it at first. I saw my hair coming out more but didn’t put it down to menopause. I’ve seen what happened to my grandmothers and I can’t see that I’m going to escape the same fate. I rinse with rice water and I’ve tried Phillip Kingsley and no one has noticed how bad it is except my sister.

Yes I found my hair thinned a lot and I got very upset. However my hairdresser was fantastic and cut it to preserve the strength of my hair and to cover the thinning parts. Don’t use anything synthetic in your hair it dies not help I used good quality hair products from red ken and less washing if my hair. I’m happy to say my hair has settled and is in good condition now. Don’t lose heart and rake vitamins for your hair use good oils that feed your scalp.

Hi, I have recently lost at least half my hair volume. I’m 57 and still having regular periods with occasional peri menopausal symptoms. I am a mystery to the doctors but healthy and happy. I think I’ll try Biotin as mentioned in a post below. Thank you.

My husband and I have been using biotin for a couple of years and it has made a difference. Get a good quality though. We have found the GNC works best for us.

I have had a problem with thinning hair. I take supplements to help support hair growth. It has made a big difference and my hair is very thick and fluffy now. You can try taking biotin, at least 10,000mcg+, vitamin b complex, vitamins c,d, and e, zinc, brewers yeast, iron, morninga, MSM, maca root, horsetail and collagen. When you wash your hair, use a shampoo and conditioner that helps support hair growth and thickness. Also you could try using a raw egg as a treatment on your hair. Use before your conditioner. Leave the egg on your hair for around 20 - 30 minutes. Raw egg is very good for fortifying hair. Then rinse with cool water so the egg does not cook. Afterwards use your conditioner to soften the hair and neutralise the eggy smell. Try not to wash your hair too often as this will wash out natural oils and put further stress on the hair. Once a week is enough. Also try using essential oils mixed in a base oil. Some base oils are almond, avocado, Castor, neem, coconut or grape seed. There are many others. Essential oils good for hair growth are peppermint, rosemary, lemon, tea tree, lavender, Cedar wood, rose, clary sage, Ylang ylang, thyme and lemongrass. Mix some of these with a base oil. If you can leave it in your hair at least overnight or for several days. The longer the better. And lastly use a little castor oil to smear very thinly onto the areas that are suffering the most. Castor oil produces fast results. Also try and eat more healthily, the simpler the better, and cut out white goods such as bread, pasta, flour and sugar. There are lots of healthier choices in the shops, plus drinkBig lots of plain water helps! I hope you find this information useful.

I have the same concern but haven’t tried any products yet. A male friend from Brazil who was worried about hair loss recommended the Keune line of products (he uses the one for men) and a female friend who’s my age (48) uses one that her dermatologist recommended. It’s called Alpecin Caffeine C1 shampoo, made in Germany. I think you need a prescription but not 100% sure. I plan to try that one soon and can report back. :)

This conversation has been very helpful!! Thank you sisters! I picked up a biotin supplement yesterday. I also read that if you are low on iron that could be a contributing factor. Check your nutrition for iron (and protein).

I’ve found using a coconut shampoo bar has helped- I use the bath bubble and beyond brand. I brush my hair before washing it gently, and I don’t use a conditioner, as I found more of my hair comes out if I do (although the brand has started a conditioner so I might try that). Then I DON’T brush my hair when wet , then blow dry. I’ve found using olive oil with an essential oil or coconut oil on my scalp before hand, for a while or over night, has helped with faster regrowth .

Yes! Suddenly thinned middle front, similar to post partum. I’ve just started taking biotin and switched to hair care without parabens etc

  • Anonymous6 years ago

I had to switch to short haircuts so the thinning is not so noticeable. I started taking multivitamins. Mayonnaise hair mask is very good. Oksana

Tara, you may wish to look at VIVISCAL, if it is available in the US. It worked for me, when I started rapidly loosing hair about 5 years ago, whilst peri menopausal. It contains biotin as well as zinc, iron, vitC , horsetail, millet plus marine proteins. Not cheap but I have never been hairier :)

Hair extensions. Game changer. I love them.

Hair supplements for me too. Also bought ‘plantar long hair’ which is like a water you put on and rub into your scalp. Not sure which or if both but have lots of short hair growth in widows peaks areas that have been thin for several years. Keep trying things until you find something that works. Also berokka has lots of vitamins and minerals.
