Has anyone else had a burning sensation in their lips (mouth)? I’m peri and in the last week or so my bottom lip has started burning. It doesn’t hurt to touch and there’s nothing visible. Does anyone have any remedy suggestions?

You may have pernicious anemia. Vitamin B12 deficiency. Common symptoms is burning mouth. As women mature they don’t get enough B12. You can get tested at a natural path and or /MD.

That’s really interesting as I have suffered with anaemia a lot in the past. It’s always been put down to having heavy periods but as I havent had a period for 4 months I wouldn’t have thought of that as a reason. Think I may have to contact the doc. Thanks for that.

It sounds like you have had iron deficiency anemia in the past due to losing iron through bleeding. Pernicious anaemia is not having enough vitamin B12. But yes, seeing your go sounds like a good idea.

Maybe. I had the same symptom but my B12 tested fine. It’s an annoying symptom!

Hi Ellie, I have the same symptoms but also my mouth burns to the point I don’t even want my own tongue in it! I’ve been diagnosed with burning mouth syndrome - all to do with Peri Menopause. I (literally) feel your pain. Antidepressants were offered to me & I did try them but my body can’t cope with them - too strong.

It’s such a weird thing isn’t it? I mean why the heck does your mouth/lips burn because of hormones, you wouldn’t even connect the two! This forum is so important. I genuinely thought the menopause was literally your periods stopping, who knew of all these other things?!!!!!

I know! I feel like my body is broken at the moment. I am suffering with so many symptoms that I longer go to work. I feel like an old lady with the aches & pains, burning mouth syndrome, 2 stone weight gain, tennis elbow in both arms, brain fog, can’t remember how to cook meals properly, almost non existent memory to the point I leave notes for myself daily to try & function from day to day. The hot flushes were so bad, I was almost at panic attack stage but fortunately my doctor listened to me & took me off HRT pills & has prescribed me Oestrogel which you just rub into your shoulders or inner thigh. Hot flushes have FINALLY gone! I would never have known of this gel until I saw some celebrity women talking of their menopause on TV. So I still have a lot of other symptoms but at least I don’t have to suffer the hot flushes at the moment. I don’t like to read how many of you are suffering but it’s comforting to know we’re not alone.

Hi Kim, I can really relate to all that you are experiencing, you have described exactly what I’m going through too. It’s so debilitating when even the simplest of tasks, such as cooking and cleaning, become a huge and confusing challenge. It’s very frustrating and has really impacted my confidence to the point I feel I’m losing my mind and can’t trust my judgement on anything. It’s one thing to be plagued by physical symptoms but there’s the mental and emotional rollercoaster that goes with it! It’s exhausting! I recently changed meds for a gastric ulcer and have experienced a burning sensation on my tongue and lips and had very swollen eyelids, I am concerned it’s a side effect from the meds but having read all these comments from fellow menopause sufferers I’m not so sure now. It’s all very confusing, so many of the menopause symptoms are very similar to other non menopause related issues, it’s difficult to separate them all. Whoever said that life gets easier as we get older must’ve been a man! I had no idea just how devastating the menopause would be, it’s much worse than puberty! I’m so glad I found this app today, I’ll take any advice and support I can get. Hang in there ladies, thank you all for sharing, I’m so sorry that you’re all suffering but it’s very reassuring to know we are not alone ? this too shall pass ✌?

My tongue burns occasionally, and my ears will get very hot and turn red often.
Helen5 years ago
I understand that is also signs of a food allergy

Yep I get tongue thing too with an odd taste. So much so I even went for the Covid test, obviously it was negative (phew) just yet another menopausal symptom. All I can say ladies is oestrogen has a lot to answer for. I also thought it was just your periods stopping but hell no, it’s so much more. I too am so very grateful for this forum, don’t leave us please.

I have had Burning mouth off and on for the last 6-8 months I couldn’t figure out what was going on until I read it can be a symptom of menopause. I have been taking B-12 off and on and haven’t noticed a difference but need to take it more regularly. Thanks for the post

I’ve had this since June - chewing gum is the only thing that helps.

Since I started Perimenopause, I had this burning sensation in my gums. As if my teeth had gotten a lot more sensitive. I normal have sensitive teeth. It lasted off and on for about a year and I haven’t had it at all lately. Going on year 2-3.

I had tingling lips and chin for a while. I upped my B2 and magnesium on my neurologists advice and I haven’t experienced it since!

Is anyone suffering from IBS too. Have been put on oestrogel now on patches. I have been experiencing gut and stomach inflammation and feel like I am on fire from my mouth to the other end! Has anyone experienced worsening of ibs symptoms? Thanks

Suffered significant intestinal issues/IBS flare (which I hadn’t had in 20 years) during meno. It lasted close to 2 years, along with insomnia and anxiety. I started taking affirmative steps to balance my gut flora with a Nutritionist (after a gastro ruled out anything else) and am thrilled to say that now—2 years post last period—I feel back to normal. It’s a new normal, but a pretty damn good one. I’m sleeping like a baby, no anxiety and gut is a little different than before meno but not in a bad way. It will get better and you will have your life and your body back. Hang in there.

I started getting burning tongue and mouth last August. Doc did blood tests but no deficiencies so have just had to put up with it. She said it might just go away after a couple of months but it’s been 6 months now. Constantly feels like I’ve drank scalding coffee. So bad sometimes and can keep me awake at night. Yet another symptom to add to the many menopause symptoms I have :-(

My lips burn

I described feeling like I’ve scalded my mouth and strange tastes that come and go to my dental hygienist. She said it was probably burning mouth syndrome and made 2 suggestions. 1 It may be triggered by spicy food. 2 Alpha Lipoic Acid may help - said it has to be 300mg a day and to try for 6 weeks after which it’ll work or not. I’m trying ALA tablets from H&B and keeping an eye on what I’m eating though, as my partner loves curry etc, avoiding spice is impossible.

Burning tongue...almost an “allergy-type itch” that happens to me certain times of the month and seems worse towards evening. I googled it and found it listed as a perimenopause/menopause symptom, surprisingly!!

What about burning brain? I got a burning type of headache working out recently (geesh, when I finally tried to get back into my routine!) and it scared me so much. I was holding an invisible chair position against the wall as a squat exercise, done it millions if times in the past, and my head felt like I had a fire in it. My gynecologist dismissed it for extra strain while exercising.
